This article reports on the active shooter incident at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where two people were killed and nine injured, describes released surveillance footage of the suspect leaving the scene, shares firsthand student accounts from lockdowns and barricades, and summarizes law enforcement and hospital updates amid an ongoing search for the suspect.

The campus in Providence was rocked by gunfire during class time, and officials now confirm two fatalities and nine wounded students. Authorities say the attacker remains at large and the motive is not yet clear, leaving the community on edge as investigators chase leads.

Police released video showing a figure departing the area after the shooting, and the footage has become a key piece in the search despite its limited clarity. The person in the video appears calm and is wearing dark clothing, but officials warn the quality does not allow easy identification of a face.

“It’s of who we believe is the suspect leaving that area walking on Hope Street and taking a right on Waterman. He’s going to be wearing dark clothing. You are not going to be able to see his face,” [Providence Police Deputy Chief] O’Hara said of the video.

Providence’s mayor reported that seven of the wounded are in critical condition at the local hospital, and all victims have been identified as students. The attack reportedly occurred inside a classroom, heightening the horror for those in exams and study sessions when violence erupted.

Students who were nearby described an immediate shift from routine to survival mode when campus alerts ordered lockdowns across buildings. One student recalls getting a text that triggered an instant scramble to contact family and check on friends, a frantic and surreal sequence of phone calls and whispered updates.

Brown student Ethan Schenker was studying for final exams in the basement of a campus library when he received a text from the university calling all students to go into lockdown.

“I immediately just called my parents and my brother to let them know I was okay and to make sure my friends were okay,” he told CNN’s Jim Sciutto. “It didn’t seem real. I think that’s what a lot of people experience and that’s what I did.”

Other students hid in closets and classrooms, turning everyday spaces into temporary forts while first responders rushed in. The panic was compounded by the uncertainty of where the shooter might be and how long it would take for the situation to be contained.

He’s now barricaded in a supply closet with a dozen others. Lights off. Silent. One student having a panic attack.

This is America in 2025. Pray for them.

Despite the chaos, students praised officers and medical teams for their quick actions and support during the emergency. Survivors describe a tense mix of fear and gratitude as medical personnel triaged the wounded and police secured perimeters around campus buildings.

Officials mobilized a heavy law enforcement response, with hundreds of officers and specialized units converging on the area to canvass neighborhoods and review surveillance. Classrooms were cleared and students were ordered to remain in lockdown through the night as searches continued into the early hours.

Witnesses and those sheltering in place detailed the emotional toll of waiting for confirmation and for reunions with loved ones, a strain that stretched families and residents well beyond the campus. Parents and community members watched updates closely, hoping for quick arrests and answers about why this tragedy occurred.

Investigators continue to analyze the released footage and other evidence to identify and locate the suspect, while hospital staff treat victims and authorities piece together a timeline. For now, the community remains focused on securing the campus, supporting the injured, and helping students and families process what happened.

As the search proceeds, law enforcement appeals to anyone with relevant information to come forward through official channels, and campus services have activated support resources for students. The wider public waits for further confirmed details and the next updates from investigators and hospital officials.

  • A speedy trial and execution would deter the next shooter. Courts are so tied up with rights of perps that they forget the right of the dead to be avenged.

    • That is true and the so called progressives which are all the loons, leftists and communists in America have infiltrated the judicial system and Congress to such an extent now that this Nation is hanging by threads over the precipice of anarchy and collapse!
