Young Americans are increasingly open to socialism and handing public policy to advanced artificial intelligence, and that combination could make centralized control vastly more practical and more dangerous. Polling shows more than half of voters ages 18 to 39 favor a democratic socialist presidential candidate and support bold socialist policies, while large shares also back giving AI broad authority over laws and rights. The convergence of youthful sympathy for collectivism, economic frustration, and techno-optimism raises real questions about liberty, oversight, and who decides how society is organized. Socialism has repeatedly failed wherever large-scale central planning replaced market signals and personal initiative. History shows centralized systems struggle to allocate resources, reward innovation, and preserve individual autonomy, and those failures are not abstract or hypothetical. Young people today seem less familiar with that record, which helps explain the appeal of a new, supposedly smarter form of collectivism.
Recent polling included 1,496 likely voters aged 18 to 39, and more than half of that cohort reportedly want a democratic socialist to win the White House in 2028. Support for specific policies is high: nearly 60 percent favor measures like a nationwide rent freeze and government-run grocery stores in every town, and more than half view certain socialist-leaning public figures favorably. Those are not marginal preferences; they reveal a sizable generational tilt toward systemic solutions over market-based fixes.
Economic anxiety is a major driver. Nearly three-in-four young likely voters think the cost of housing is at a crisis level, and only 22 percent believe they will be better off than their parents. When people feel squeezed, they look for bold structural answers, and that makes sweeping proposals more attractive. But attractive does not mean safe or sustainable, especially when policy choices trade efficiency for control.
Another striking trend is openness to machine authority. More than 40 percent of young likely voters are reportedly comfortable with an advanced AI system making most public policy decisions, and more than a third would let AI revise the Constitution, determine individual rights, or manage the world’s largest militaries. That level of trust in opaque algorithms and centralized computation reflects both awe of technological promise and a lack of skepticism about concentrated power.
Combine those attitudes and you get a risky hypothetical: what if AI made large-scale socialism technically feasible? Modern AI and quantum computing can process vast amounts of data in real time, optimize allocations, and monitor behavior at scales human bureaucracies could never match. An AI-driven command-and-control economy could, in theory, redistribute wealth, allocate resources, and enforce uniform outcomes with terrifying efficiency.
That efficiency would be sold as a virtue. An AI-infused socialist program could be billed as incorruptible, all-knowing, and more effective than human-led agencies that historically mismanaged economies. Those sales pitches are powerful because they promise to fix problems that old-style governments could not, but they also obscure who controls the code, how priorities are set, and what happens when the system’s goals diverge from individual rights.
A machine-optimized socialist state raises fundamental questions about freedom and accountability. If algorithms decide rights, who audits the algorithms and who chooses the values they optimize? Systems that guarantee equal outcomes often do so by eliminating inconvenient freedoms, and when enforcement is automated the levers of coercion become harder to challenge. Technology can magnify good intentions into wide-ranging social control with relatively little democratic friction.
The theoretical promise of a flawless, perfectly rational planner ignores human incentives and moral complexity. Centralized planning has never accounted well for creativity, entrepreneurship, and the messy trade-offs that define free societies. Even if an AI outperforms humans at resource matching, it cannot substitute for public judgment about justice, dignity, and the limits of state power without creating new risks of abuse.
Young Americans deserve solutions to real problems like housing and economic stagnation, but those solutions should protect liberty and individual autonomy. Debates about economic systems and the role of technology need to include questions about oversight, contestability, and the preservation of personal freedom. If socialism and AI governance become linked, policymakers and citizens must insist on clear guardrails, transparent incentives, and firm limits on centralized authority to prevent efficient tyranny.
The goals of our education system have been met and the country will eventually fall into the socialist abyss!
