An active shooter incident erupted at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, forcing shelter-in-place orders and emergency alerts across campus as authorities work to secure the area and account for students and staff.

Late Saturday afternoon the campus was put on high alert when gunfire was reported near the engineering buildings, and the university sent a stark safety message to everyone on site. Students and faculty were told to take immediate protective steps while law enforcement rushed to contain the situation. Local witnesses described chaotic scenes and reported multiple victims, heightening fear and uncertainty across the campus community.

University officials instructed people to follow a “run, hide, fight” protocol while they investigated and coordinated response efforts with local police. That basic guidance was meant to help people make split-second decisions if they were in the affected area. The order to shelter came as classrooms, dorms, and common areas filled with people trying to figure out where to go and what to do.

Students at Brown University are being urge to ‘run, hide and fight’ amid fears of an active shooter.

The Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island has been shutdown following reports of ‘multiple victims’.

The terrifying incident unfolded near Barus and Holley Engineering, according to an alert sent out.

On-the-ground reports suggested the scale of the incident could be significant, with some witnesses estimating as many as 20 people wounded, though those figures were unconfirmed. Emergency responders were seen moving through the area, attending to the injured and moving people to safety. Hospitals in the region were placed on alert as first responders triaged and transported victims.

The university alert was direct and concise about the steps people should take if they found themselves in the danger zone. Evacuation was encouraged where it could be done safely, while hiding and taking cover was the next option for those trapped or unable to get out. As a last resort, the alert acknowledged that resisting an attacker might be necessary to survive.

“Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself,” school officials wrote in the alert. “Stay tuned for further safety information.”

Campus life ground to a halt as messages and phone alerts kept people locked down and waiting for official updates from police and university officials. Parents and family members called, trying to learn whether loved ones were safe, while students used social apps to check on friends and compare notes. The mix of official warnings and eyewitness posts created a tense, rapidly changing information environment.

Law enforcement sources worked through the afternoon to locate the suspect and secure the scene, and authorities urged anyone with usable information to come forward. Investigators focused on the area around the engineering complex where initial calls reported gunfire. Throughout the response, first responders prioritized stabilizing victims and preventing any further harm to people on campus.

The situation remained active as daylight faded, and officials continued to emphasize caution and cooperation with police instructions. For now the community remains on edge while emergency services sort out what happened and how many people were affected. Updates were expected as investigators finished securing the scene and released verified information about casualties and any suspect status.

  • Students at Brown University are being urge to ‘run, hide and fight’ amid fears of an active shooter.
What? Are the students supposed to run after the shooter, fight, then hide? What an absolutely senseless comment for them to make.

    • I’m quoting the official school announcement from above “Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself,” school officials wrote in the alert. “Stay tuned for further safety information.”
And that says to run or hide and fight as a last resort; in other words if in a jam with no other worthwhile alternative like fleeing for your life or hiding well enough to be safe, then by all means do what you must to defend your own life, which means if you can clobber the culprit and kick the shit out of him if that’s the only thing left to do; or you can surrender and say kill me in other words, which would be very lame and Stupid!
