A suspicious device found inside a vehicle near Gracie Mansion prompted evacuations and a bomb squad response, expanding an already alarming investigation into explosives linked to a Saturday attack near a protest. Authorities have frozen the area, made arrests in connection with the earlier incident, and federal and local agencies are treating the events with the gravity they deserve.

Evacuations are underway around Gracie Mansion after officers identified what they called a suspicious device in a vehicle on East End Avenue between 81st Street and 82nd Street. The scene sits close to the official mayoral residence and was quickly secured as bomb technicians moved in to assess the threat. Neighbors and bystanders were told to leave nearby buildings as a precaution while investigators worked.

“In connection with the ongoing investigation into the improvised explosive device deployed yesterday, the NYPD has identified a suspicious device in a vehicle on East End Avenue between 81st Street and 82nd Street. NYPD officers have frozen the area around the vehicle and are conducting limited evacuations of buildings in the vicinity while the Bomb Squad assesses and removes the device.”

The device was discovered amid an investigation into an earlier attack in which an improvised explosive device was thrown during a protest. Law enforcement sources say the Saturday incident targeted police and supporters of an “anti-Islamification” protest, and two men identified as Emir Balat & Ibrahim Kayumi were arrested in connection with that episode. Officials stressed that they are treating both scenes as part of a broader inquiry into violent conduct around the demonstration.

Investigators have been clear that the item used in Saturday’s attack “was not a hoax device or a smoke bomb,” but “an improvised explosive device that could have caused serious injury or death.” That assessment raised immediate concern about motive and capability, given how dangerous that class of explosive can be. Once word spread that an actual IED had been involved, agencies escalated the response and brought in specialized units.

Retired NYPD inspector Paul Mauro shared analysis from sources who said the devices were allegedly charged with TATP, explaining the significance and danger in blunt terms. He warned that “[TATP] is a favorite of real terrorists, and not something two street-level knuckleheads would likely produce. This was no M-80 wrapped in nails and tape. It’s very hard to detect, very powerful, and extremely unstable.” Those remarks underscore how serious the threat could have been if the devices detonated as intended.

The NYPD and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are treating Saturday’s attack as a possible act of terrorism, noting that one of the suspects allegedly referenced ISIS in statements to law enforcement. Federal involvement signals the investigation’s potential scope and the willingness of authorities to pursue any connections to extremist ideology or networks. Sources indicate teams are coordinating to trace materials, communications, and movements tied to the suspects.

Police presence has remained robust around the scene as controlled procedures proceeded and bomb technicians removed the identified device from the vehicle. Officials have not released all investigative details publicly, citing operational security and the need to protect evidence and ongoing lines of inquiry. Still, the quick arrests and the identification of explosive components suggest law enforcement is narrowing the focus.

Residents on the Upper East Side reported shock and concern as streets were cordoned off and normal routines disrupted by evacuations and sweeps. City leadership faces tough questions about public safety and order when violent acts reach the vicinity of high-profile municipal sites. As investigators comb through forensic leads, local communities are watching for clear answers and assurances that similar incidents will be prevented.

The discovery adds a troubling chapter to a volatile moment around protests and counterprotests, where demonstrations have at times moved beyond protected speech into violent action. Authorities have reiterated that they will use every available legal and investigative tool to hold individuals accountable and to prevent further harm. For now, the area remains under watch while specialists complete their work and officials weigh next steps.
