Ukraine has quietly developed a homegrown glide bomb that marries a World War II idea with modern guidance, promising a low-cost, domestically produced stand-off weapon; this article explains what it is, who built it, how it fits into Ukraine’s logistics picture, and how quickly it moved from concept to production.

The fighting in Ukraine remains a grinding contest with front lines that barely move, but technology keeps changing the terms of engagement. A company called DG Industry, supported by a defense technology group named Brave1, developed a glide bomb that converts a conventional payload into a precision stand-off weapon. Glide bombs themselves are not new. They were used decades ago with crude guidance systems, notably in World War II, but the modern twist is updated avionics and sensors. That upgrade makes a basic, inexpensive munition far more flexible and gives aircraft a safer operating envelope when attacking well-defended targets.

Ukraine is buying a homegrown glide bomb that could help its pilots strike Russian forces from a safer distance while relying less on weapons supplied by the U.S. and Europe.

The new weapon is called the Vyrivniuvach, or “Equalizer.” It was developed by Ukrainian company DG Industry with support from Brave1, a government-backed defense technology group.

A Ukrainian military official told Ukrinform that the bomb has finished testing and is now being bought for the armed forces. Fox News Digital has reached out to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense for more details.

Producing weapons domestically reduces the strain on foreign supply lines and the political uncertainty that comes with them. Ukraine has been heavily dependent on U.S. and European weapons, and every capability it can make at home improves resilience and shortens logistical tails for frontline units.

The Equalizer, or Vyrivniuvach, is reported to have a 250 kg warhead and was developed in about 17 months, a pace that highlights how smaller, focused defense teams can iterate quickly. Rapid development cycles matter in a long war of attrition where small advantages can pay off on the battlefield.

The Equalizer turns a conventional bomb into a precision weapon by adding wings and guidance systems. It is designed to be dropped from Ukraine’s MiG-29, Su-24 and Su-27 warplanes, allowing pilots to attack targets farther behind Russian lines while staying farther away from Russian air defenses.

Because the design is straightforward, Ukraine can scale production if it secures the necessary raw materials and components. That makes glide bombs a candidate for mass procurement and repeatable manufacturing, unlike some high-tech systems that rely on scarce parts or outside contractors.

The glide bomb’s effectiveness will depend on guidance quality, integration with aircraft, and how air defenses adapt, but the military logic is solid: extend range, reduce risk to pilots, and create options that are cheaper and quicker to field. For a country under siege, that kind of practicality has immediate appeal.

Industry observers have noted the symbolic weight of a domestically produced stand-off weapon: it signals a shift from dependence toward a more self-sufficient defense posture. Licensing agreements and other domestic production moves elsewhere — like agreements to build certain interceptors at home — echo the same theme of bolstering local capacity.

Development started publicly only months ago and already seems to have moved to production, showing how wartime pressures compress innovation timelines. Whether the glide bomb will change the operational picture substantially remains to be seen, but it is a notable addition to Ukraine’s toolkit.

The war continues to be a contest of resources and endurance, and this glide bomb is an example of incremental innovation that can matter over time. As Ukraine seeks ways to preserve fighting power and strike from safer distances, low-cost, scalable weapons like this one are likely to keep appearing on the battlefield.
