A suspect described as a “person of interest” was detained in Coventry, Rhode Island, after the Brown University shooting that killed two people and injured nine. Federal and local authorities worked off a Providence Police tip, deployed specialized teams, and set up systems to process digital media and evidence as the investigation continues. Officials have released limited demographic details and say they are working around the clock to support victims and reconstruct the scene. This article lays out the known timeline, official statements, eyewitness accounts, and what investigators have disclosed so far.

Law enforcement sources say agents from the FBI’s Boston office, the U.S. Marshals, and local police detained a person of interest in a hotel room in Coventry based on investigative leads provided by Providence Police. Early public statements from investigators gave conflicting age estimates, first saying the individual was in their 30s and later saying they were in their 20s. Investigators have not disclosed the person’s gender or race, and officials have not confirmed any ties between that person and Brown University.

Authorities have emphasized that the probe is active and that many details remain under review, including motive and whether the suspect had a connection to the campus community. FBI leadership said specialized units were mobilized to assist, including teams focused on cellular analysis and digital forensics to develop and validate leads. The FBI also established a digital portal to collect images and video from the public to speed evidence intake and analysis.

An update on the @FBI response at Brown University:

@FBIBoston established a command post to intake, develop and analyze leads, and run them to ground.

We activated the FBI’s Cellular Analysis Survey Team, to provide critical geolocation capabilities.

As a result, early this morning, FBI Boston’s Safe Streets Task Force, with assistance from the @USMarshalsHQ & the @Coventry_RI_PD, detained a person of interest in a hotel room in Coventry, RI, based off a lead by the @ProvidenceRIPD.

We have deployed local and national resources to process and reconstruct the shooting scene – providing HQ and Lab elements on scene.

We set up a digital media intake portal to ingest images and video from the public related to this incident.

And the FBI’s victim specialists are fully integrating with our partners to provide resources to victims and survivors of this horrific violence.

This FBI will continue an all out 24/7 campaign until justice is fully served.

Thanks to the men and women of the FBI and our partners for their continued teamwork. Please continue praying for the victims and their families – as well as all those at Brown University.

Local officials briefed the public in two press conferences on Sunday, and responded to ongoing questions about victim status and investigative priorities. Providence’s mayor provided an update on injuries: one of the nine wounded has been discharged, one remains in critical but stable condition, and seven are stable. The mayor stressed the dual priorities of bringing the responsible party to justice and providing care for those still hospitalized.

Eyewitness accounts from campus describe chaotic scenes and quick thinking by staff and students to protect one another after shots rang out. A Brown student who was at the Hillel building that night described how security personnel directed people to safety and then assisted in getting students back to dorms. That student also spoke about the personal loss he experienced, saying he lost a close friend whose name has not been released publicly.

“I was celebrating Shabbat…all of a sudden, it wasn’t over yet, the security guard leaped into action. He said, everyone, upstairs.

“None of us were on our phones. The security guard at the Hillel building just leaped into action, and he said, ‘Everyone upstairs, this is really serious. There’s a shooter.

“I actually lost a very good friend of mine… I don’t think her name is public yet,” he said. But she was a really, really special person… really amazing at creating dialogue and interfaith activities, and we’ll really miss her.”

Investigators say the shooter fired more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, and law enforcement reported recovery of two loaded 30-round magazines at the scene even though a firearm had not been publicly recovered as of Sunday morning. Officials have described an intense evidence collection process at the scene, with FBI lab and headquarters elements assisting local teams to reconstruct what happened and to identify forensic links. That reconstruction work includes reviewing surveillance and bystander video, gathering witness statements, and running electronic leads.

Multiple accounts indicate the shooting took place during an in-class review session in an auditorium-style lecture hall used for a course led by a faculty member who researches the intersection of economics and Jewish studies. The professor was not in the room at the time; a teaching assistant had been supervising the review session when the attack occurred. Officials have said there is no current indication the professor was a target, and investigators are treating motive as an open question while they follow leads.

Federal and local agencies have emphasized victim support as part of the response, deploying victim specialists and coordinating services with campus partners. The ongoing investigation remains fluid, with law enforcement urging anyone with relevant footage or information to use established intake channels. Authorities continue to work around the clock across agencies to piece together timelines, trace movements and communications, and determine next steps in the criminal process.
