The hearing in front of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee laid bare a dangerous trend: ICE officers and their families are under unprecedented threat, with Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons detailing death threats, doxxing, and violent rhetoric tied to the same environment that produced the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Lyons testified about massive increases in assaults and threats, and he shared a specific chilling post that named him the same week Charlie Kirk was killed, underscoring how rhetoric and real-world violence now intersect. This account came amid broader clashes over immigration enforcement in Minnesota and accusations that elected officials helped stoke anti-ICE sentiment. The testimony calls for sober recognition that enforcement officers are being targeted at home and on the job by both criminal organizations and politically fueled agitation.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons testified forcefully about the sharp rise in attacks on border and immigration officers, framing it as the deadliest operating environment in ICE history. He cited staggering percentage increases in death threats and assaults, and he recounted personal threats against his family. From a Republican perspective, this is a direct consequence of soft policies and irresponsible rhetoric that embolden bad actors. The focus needs to be on protecting personnel who enforce laws Congress has passed.
Lyons pointed to a spike in threats during Fiscal Year 2025, with death threats reportedly up over 8,000 percent and assaults up more than 1,400 percent. He described officers being called the “gestapo” or “secret police,” language that, when amplified by public figures, can lead to real-world violence. One Minnesota officer allegedly had a finger bitten off by a protestor during an incident Lyons referenced. This is not abstract; it’s bodily harm with long-term consequences for officers and families.
Lyons made clear that the families of ICE personnel have also been targeted and terrorized, sometimes by people posting videos and personal information online. He said cartels and other criminal groups have posted schematics to agents’ homes, and that doxxing has reached the point of exposing where officers and their children go to school. The FBI and Secret Service have been involved in protective operations, but Lyons’ testimony emphasized that the risk environment has fundamentally changed. Those who enforce immigration laws should not be forced to live in fear for doing their duty.
When pressed by Republicans during the hearing, Lyons offered a vivid example of the intersection between public violence and online threats. He described seeing a tweet that said, “kill Charlie Kirk, kill another,” and another line in the same thread that named him directly: “kill Todd Lyons.” Those exact words are chilling because they show how easily calls for violence can pivot from rhetoric to specific threats. Conservatives argue this demonstrates the need for accountability for violent rhetoric and for stronger protection for federal agents.
“We are facing the deadliest operating environment in our agency’s history. ICE personnel, not to mention their families, are under assault like never before in this country. In Fiscal Year 2025, death threats against ICE personnel increased by more than 8,000 percent. Assaults on our officers have skyrocketed by over 1,400 percent. One officer in Minnesota had his finger bitten off by a left-wing protestor, egged on by elected officials characterizing our officers as the “gestapo” or “secret police.”
The families of ICE personnel have been made to feel unsafe in their own homes simply because their loved ones have the courage to enforce the laws passed by this Congress. Notably, those criticizing ICE and encouraging this violence against our officers and their families were silent amid the horrors perpetrated by cartels and human traffickers due to a lack of immigration enforcement under the Biden Administration.
I know this reality firsthand. My own family has been targeted. But let me send a message to anyone who thinks they can intimidate us: You will fail.
Lyons also described specific doxxing incidents, including people posting a videotape of his wife walking to work and others erecting flyers with officers’ home addresses and school locations. He said ICE worked with the Secret Service to identify the doxxers in at least one operation. This kind of organized exposure is a dangerous escalation that can invite violence and harassment. Protecting officers and their families requires vigorous law enforcement response and political clarity about consequences for incitement.
“I’ll just use myself as an example. The week that Charlie Kirk was assassinated, there was a tweet that went out. It said, ‘kill Charlie Kirk, kill another,’ there was another individual in that, ‘kill Todd Lyons.’ That’s the stuff that I see.
Yesterday, after the testimony on Tuesday, I went back to numerous death threats against my family. There was a videotape of my wife walking to work that people actively post. The cartels have actually posted the schematics to my home. ICE agents feel that every day. We actually did an operation with the Secret Service where we identified doxxers who put up on telephone poles the home addresses and the schools where ICE officers and agents went to.”
Lyons said neither he nor his agents wanted to hide behind masks forever; they simply want to do their jobs without fearing for their lives or the safety of their families. The testimony in Minnesota came as ICE presence there is reportedly winding down, but Lyons made clear that the threats do not end with deployments. From a conservative viewpoint, the right response is to support law enforcement, clamp down on violent rhetoric, and restore firm immigration enforcement so cartels lose power and incentive to target Americans.
