Breaking: New ICE Shooting in Minnesota After Alleged Attack With Shovel (Updated)

Reports say another ICE-involved shooting happened in Minneapolis during a targeted contact by federal officers. Initial accounts came through Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin and multiple law enforcement sources who were briefed on the scene.

According to Fox News’ Bill Melugin:

I’m told by four law enforcement sources there has been another ICE involved shooting in Minneapolis tonight. I’m told ICE was making contact with a target who then allegedly assaulted an officer with a shovel or swung a shovel, shots were fired, and the suspect ran back to a house. No info yet on if anyone was actually shot – just that shots were fired.

Melugin later provided more detail, reporting that the man was shot, that he was Venezuelan, and that his condition was stable after being treated. Those details shifted the account from uncertainty about any injuries to confirmation that the suspect had been wounded and hospitalized.

Activists began converging on the scene almost immediately, according to reports, arriving before authorities had completed their initial work. That rapid mobilization added tension to an already volatile situation and complicated efforts to secure the area and gather facts.

Video from the scene has been circulated, though observers noted the audio quality is poor and some clips are garbled. Even with imperfect footage, the presence of bystanders and organizers influenced how quickly the story spread on social platforms and local networks.

Officials indicated federal agents were moving in to secure the scene and contain the situation, bringing additional resources to the location. The response included steps to protect officers and preserve evidence while medical aid was provided to those involved.

An update relayed from Melugin included a DHS statement that laid out the sequence of events as federal authorities understand them. That statement said a targeted traffic stop took place, the subject fled in a vehicle and crashed, then fled on foot and resisted apprehension, leading to a violent struggle.

From the DHS account: “At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela who was released into the country by Joe Biden in 2022. In an attempt to evade arrest, the subject fled the scene in his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. The subject then fled on foot.” These lines frame the incident within ongoing national debates about immigration enforcement.

Continuing the DHS account: “The law enforcement officer caught up to the subject on foot and attempted to apprehend him when the subject began to resist and violently assault the officer. While the subject and law enforcement were in a struggle on the ground, two subjects came out of a nearby apartment and also attacked the law enforcement officer with a snow shovel and broom handle.” That description paints a chaotic scene in which multiple people allegedly joined the attack.

The statement added: “As the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broom stick. Fearing for his life and safety as he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg. All three subjects ran back into the apartment and barricaded themselves inside. The attacked officer and subject are both in the hospital. Both attackers are in custody.”

The DHS statement also connected the incident to political rhetoric, saying Minnesota leaders had been “actively encouraging an organized resistance to ICE and federal law enforcement officers.” It used that claim to criticize local officials for fostering an environment hostile to federal agents amid rising assaults on law enforcement.

On the ground, witnesses and responders focused on immediate safety and medical needs, while investigators worked to piece together what happened. The presence of multiple attackers, the use of improvised weapons, and the defensive shooting all figure into the investigation that will determine whether officers acted within policy and law.

Local law enforcement and federal partners are coordinating the next steps, which include interviewing witnesses, processing the scene, and reviewing any available video and radio traffic. The case will likely involve both criminal and administrative inquiries given the number of people involved and the serious nature of the injuries reported.

This remains an active and developing story with details continuing to emerge. Officials will release additional information as investigations progress and medical updates become available for those taken to the hospital.
