CNN’s decision to cancel NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley’s talk show, “King Charles,” after just six months has sent shockwaves through the television industry.

The show, which featured Barkley alongside co-host Gayle King, failed to meet expectations in terms of viewership, ultimately leading to its demise.

From the outset, “King Charles” faced an uphill battle with ratings. Nielson data revealed that the show was the lowest-rated prime-time weeknight series for CNN in the past decade.

Despite initial hopes for a successful run until spring, the program struggled to attract an audience, averaging just 459,000 total viewers over its first 14 episodes.

The partnership between Barkley and King failed to resonate with viewers, as evidenced by the show’s lackluster performance.

Even against reruns of popular sitcoms like “Friends” and episodes of “South Park,” “King Charles” couldn’t gain traction in its time slot.

Critics pointed out that pairing Barkley with King was a misguided decision from the start. While Barkley is known for his charismatic presence on TNT alongside fellow analysts Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal, his dynamic with King on CNN fell flat.

The mismatched duo failed to capture audience interest and struggled to deliver compelling content that resonated with viewers.

Barkley’s controversial remarks further fueled negative attention towards the show. In one instance, he made headlines for threatening physical violence against individuals wearing Trump-branded merchandise.

“I’m just going to say this. If I see a black person walking around with Trump mugs, I’m going to punch him in the face.”

In response to Barkley’s threat, Gayle King told Barkley she would “bail him out.”

His inflammatory comments drew criticism and overshadowed any potential positive aspects of the program.

Despite efforts to salvage the show’s performance, including promises of bailouts from King in response to Barkley’s statements, “King Charles” ultimately couldn’t overcome its ratings challenges.

The decision to pull the plug on the program marked a disappointing end to what was intended to be a long-term addition to CNN’s lineup.

  • The demos talk of Trump making remarks. Someone needs to remind Barkley & I think they just did. He got what he deserved.

  • Well let’s face it. CNN isn’t what it used to be when it began in 1980. By the 90s it became known as the Clinton News Networks, and thereafter the Communist News Network. That said, MSNBC has always been as bad if not worse.
