The rural community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, was rocked by a mass shooting at its secondary school that left multiple victims dead and many injured, with authorities confirming the alleged shooter also died of a “self-inflicted injury.” Local officials, provincial leaders, and federal representatives issued statements of condolence while emergency services worked to secure the scene and care for the wounded. The incident is described as one of the deadliest school shootings in Canadian history, prompting school closures and a coordinated response from government agencies. This report assembles the confirmed facts, official statements, and the immediate actions taken by responders and officials.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police investigators reported that nine people were discovered dead at the scene and the suspected shooter was found deceased from a “self-inflicted injury.” Authorities identified six victims inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and additional victims at a nearby residence, with one person pronounced dead while being transported to hospital. Emergency teams treated dozens of others at the scene, and some were flown to regional trauma centres with life-threatening injuries.

North District Chief Supt. Ken Floyd explained that an active shooter alert was issued in the early afternoon for Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, a small high school with fewer than 200 students. In that alert, the suspect was described as a woman wearing a dress with brown hair, and that information guided the immediate tactical response and evacuations. Chief Supt. Floyd later confirmed that all remaining students and staff had been safely evacuated and that the situation was stable once officers had secured the campus.

Six victims were found inside the school. Two more victims were located at a residence near the school, and one critically injured person died while en route to medical care. Local emergency medical services reported treating around 25 people at the scene, with several requiring air transport to hospitals in larger centres for advanced care.

British Columbia Premier David Eby issued a public message offering condolences to those affected and promising government support to the community during the coming days. The Premier arranged to address the town later in the evening to provide updates and coordinate provincial resources for victims’ families and first responders. Provincial agencies have mobilized mental health and victim support teams to assist residents grappling with the immediate aftermath.

Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones.

Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.

Officials noted the small size and remote location of the community complicated a rapid emergency response, yet local responders, RCMP detachments, and provincial resources coordinated quickly to contain the scene. Investigators have sealed the site to conduct forensic work and piece together the sequence of events that led to the shooting. Police are examining motives, movements, and any potential accomplices while protecting the integrity of the investigation.

School district administrators announced that both the elementary and secondary schools in Tumbler Ridge would remain closed for the rest of the week to allow for counselling and recovery, as well as to complete safety assessments. District staff and educators are working with provincial support teams to arrange services for students and families affected by the tragedy. Community leaders emphasized the need for privacy and space for grieving families while coordinating memorial and practical support.

The shooting in Tumbler Ridge ranks among the deadliest attacks on a Canadian school in recent history, evoking painful memories of past mass killings in the country. “The shooting at the small, rural high school today is the second deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, behind the massacre that left 14 dead at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989,” one official noted, and added context by referencing other past incidents that have shaped Canada’s awareness of such violence. Those historical references underscore the national impact and the gravity of the loss for a single small community.

Five people were killed in a series of shootings in La Loche, Sask., on Jan. 22, 2016, including two at a community school.

Prime Minister Mark Carney issued a public statement expressing devastation, condolences, and support for first responders and affected families, and confirmed federal officials were working with provincial counterparts to coordinate assistance. The federal message emphasized unity, empathy, and the government’s commitment to ensuring victims and the community receive necessary support. Local leaders asked residents to rely on official channels for updates and to respect the privacy of families during this sensitive time.

I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.

I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens.

Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.

I have connected with Premier Eby to express my condolences, and with the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, who is coordinating the federal response.

Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy.

Investigators continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses, and authorities have appealed to anyone with information to contact the RCMP detachment handling the case. Local leaders and emergency coordinators are focused on victim care, managing the investigation responsibly, and supporting a grieving town. This remains an active and developing situation as officials work to bring clarity and aid to those affected.
