The Mall of Louisiana shooting in Baton Rouge left six people injured, including two in critical condition, after an afternoon dispute escalated in the food court; law enforcement quickly arrested multiple suspects, hospitals secured the scene, and federal agents joined the response as authorities work to sort victims, motives, and bystander harm.
Around 1:30 PM Central on Thursday, police were called to the Mall of Louisiana after reports of gunfire in the food court. Initial chaos and conflicting counts complicated early reporting, but officials later clarified casualty numbers and began piecing together the sequence that led to the violence.
An argument between two groups of people at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge turned into a mass shooting on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
The Baton Rouge Police Department said in a press conference that six people were taken to the hospital from the incident. The Baton Rouge police chief that clarified that there were six total victims, one of which was pronounced dead.
Officials originally reported that there were 10 victims.
“Two groups of people got into an argument inside the food court and started shooting at each other,” Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse told reporters. “Unfortunately there were some innocent people in the area who might have also caught some rounds.”
Morse said at the time that at least two people needed surgery.
As of 5:22 p.m. Eastern, authorities said that five suspects are in custody in connection to the shooting.
Authorities confirmed that six people were taken to hospitals following the shooting, and one victim was later reported deceased. The initial confusion over victim counts — with earlier figures suggesting as many as 10 people affected — highlights how fast misinformation can spread during active incidents.
Baton Rouge Police Chief T.J. Morse and Mayor Sid Edwards addressed the public during a press conference to provide updates and to urge caution while investigators secured evidence and interviewed witnesses. Officials emphasized that what began as an argument between two groups quickly escalated and that some bystanders may have been injured despite not being involved in the dispute.
Louisiana’s Governor Jeff Landry (R) released a statement:
Most injured people were taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, which instituted secured access and asked family members to report to a designated entrance. The hospital said visitation was restricted while emergency rooms remained open and staff continued to care for patients and coordinate family notifications.
It remains unclear how many of the victims were the intended targets and how many were unintended bystanders. Determining who fired, why, and whether weapons were legally possessed is part of an ongoing investigation that will involve witness interviews, surveillance footage review, and ballistics testing.
WATCH:
Federal involvement followed local action when FBI Director Kash Patel announced that agents from the FBI’s Baton Rouge regional office were assisting on scene. The presence of federal agents typically signals either cross-jurisdictional evidence needs or a request for additional investigative resources and forensic support.
Local law enforcement reported five suspects in custody by midafternoon, but investigators cautioned that arrests do not always reflect final charges or a complete understanding of each individual’s role. The process from arrest to charging requires evidence collection, interviews, and consultation with prosecutors before formal complaints are filed.
This shooting arrives amid a grim stretch for Louisiana, where multiple violent incidents in recent days have drawn intense public attention. Officials and community leaders must now balance immediate response, victim support, and longer-term measures to prevent repeat tragedies in public spaces.
Emergency responders, hospital staff, and investigators continue to manage the operational and human toll of the event while urging the public to rely on verified updates from authorities. As first responders worked the scene, hospitals secured access, and families sought information, the community faced the difficult task of supporting victims and rebuilding a sense of safety.
Investigators will review surveillance footage from the mall, collect witness statements, and process forensic evidence to determine sequence and responsibility. Public safety officials said they are focused on accountability and on ensuring that those directly responsible for the shooting face appropriate legal consequences.
Community leaders have called for calm and cooperation with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds. Officials ask anyone with relevant information or footage to come forward to assist in the effort to understand what happened and to prevent further violence in shared public spaces.
