Democrat Elites Wage Attack On ICE, Fueling Chaos Now

This has turned routine immigration enforcement into a wedge issue rather than a sober discussion about law and order.

Across the country, Democratic candidates are expressing horror at Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s tactics and ratcheting up calls to restrict the agency’s reach in the wake of Good’s killing and other dramatic ICE escalations. But even as public outcry has Democrats shifting out of the defensive crouch on immigration they took following President Donald Trump’s 2024 victory, old intraparty fissures about whether to rein in, defund or abolish ICE have roared back to the fore in key Democratic primaries.

The uproar ignores that ICE is enforcing existing law aimed at removing people who entered the country without authorization. Those actions look like standard police operations because they are. Comparing them to repression in authoritarian regimes is overheated and misleading. When enforcement leads to confrontations, the facts often show officers responding to threats, not engaging in arbitrary brutality.

Take the case that sparked one of the biggest recent controversies: Renee Good in Minnesota. She was reportedly involved in coordinated activism and used her vehicle to block ICE agents. Video released from the scene shows her driving into a confrontation with an agent, and that agent later was reported to have internal injuries. A vehicle used as a weapon is a legitimate deadly threat to officers, and that context matters when assessing the shooting.

Still, Democrats and many progressive activists have reacted with sustained outrage, depicting ICE as a cruel instrument of a supposedly authoritarian administration. Prominent Democrats have used extreme language: some have called ICE “lawless,” others have demanded the agency be “torn down,” and governors and local leaders have likened the agency to historical tyrannies. That rhetoric fuels protests and can cross into intimidation of law enforcement and ordinary citizens.

That escalation is not limited to rhetoric. Organizers and political operatives have pushed narratives and ads that paint enforcement as evil and personally target officials, while some elected Democrats solicit donations to “fight” the administration over ICE operations. The net effect is to radicalize supporters and normalize aggressive demonstrations, as seen in incidents where protesters invaded a church to confront parishioners, prompting a federal inquiry.

Perspective matters. If an individual has only the offense of entering the country illegally, ICE’s response is typically arrest and deportation, not long prison sentences or torture. The law that authorizes these actions predates the current administration and was enacted under prior Congresses and presidents. Enforcement is not a novel invention of one White House; it is the application of long-standing statutes.

Many Democrats appear to be using this issue for electoral advantage, hoping that continuous outrage will wear down public patience and shift blame to political opponents. Some also seek to expand their voter coalitions by appearing sympathetic to noncitizen communities. Local leaders in Minnesota, facing scrutiny over large-scale Somali-led fraud allegations that reportedly cost taxpayers billions, also have incentives to redirect public attention away from their own administrative failures.

The comparisons to the mid-19th century split that led to catastrophic national conflict are charged and historically blunt. Invoking the 1840s through the 1860s to describe modern Democratic tactics is an explicit claim that current behavior fuels disunity and undermines institutions that hold the republic together. Critics argue that reckless rhetoric and political theater do not preserve civic order or the rule of law.

Instead of calm, constructive debate, the situation has become a cycle: enforcement action, political outrage, amplified protest, and calls for radical institutional change. That loop benefits partisan operatives while complicating law-enforcement work and chilling civil discourse. Local and national leaders trading incendiary metaphors for policy discussion only deepen polarization at the expense of public safety and common-sense immigration reform.

The public deserves clear-eyed reporting on what happened in each incident, a measured assessment of law enforcement conduct, and honest debate about immigration policy. Inflaming emotion with extreme comparisons and partisan fundraising appeals distracts from those tasks and risks making ordinary communities less safe. Responsible leadership would separate necessary enforcement of immigration laws from opportunistic political spin and focus on real solutions rather than theatrical condemnation.
