White House Uses NYT Reporter’s Words To Reject Trump Fatigue

The White House pushed back hard against a New York Times report that suggested President Donald Trump was showing signs of fatigue, using the reporter’s past coverage as material and insisting the administration will call out inaccurate, anonymous-driven journalism.

At a recent press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt directly criticized a New York Times piece that claimed the president was doing less and might not be fit for the job. She stressed the story mischaracterized the president’s schedule and health, calling the piece “unequivocally false” and pointing to a pattern of favorable coverage of other presidents by the same reporter.

Leavitt specifically referenced past reporting by the same journalist that cast President Biden’s health in a glowing light, holding up that coverage as evidence of inconsistent standards. She noted headlines praising Biden as “healthy” and “vigorous” after incidents that received widespread attention, and contrasted that tone with what she described as a rush to label President Trump unfit.

“One fake news story over the weekend, before I let you all go, from the New York Times that took about one-third of the president’s daily calendar and his daily schedule, and said that ‘he’s doing less than he did in his first term or he might not be fit for the job,’ that is unequivocally false,” Leavitt said.

She held the previous article up while reading the line, “Biden is doing 100 percent fine after tripping while boarding Air Force One,” using it to underline the disparity she sees in coverage. The press secretary made the point that the same outlet and the same reporter had written both pieces, asking rhetorically whether readers would accept such uneven treatment if the roles were reversed.

“Same outlet, same reporter who wrote that President Trump is not fit for the job,” Leavitt continued. “Are you kidding me? “Another one [article], ‘Biden declared ‘healthy’ and ‘vigorous’ after this first presidential physical.’ Hmmm, I don’t see headlines like that too often about this president. Again, same reporter, same outlet, who wrote falsely over the weekend that President Trump is not fit for the job. I can assure you, he absolutely is.”

The White House also reminded reporters that it has released multiple detailed health updates and MRI information showing the president in good condition. Leavitt emphasized that those official reports are the factual record the public should consider when news outlets run contrary narratives based on anonymous tips.

When questioned later about a new White House compilation it published highlighting what it called misleading coverage, Leavitt said the administration will name outlets and reporters that push false stories. She framed that move as part of a Day One pledge to hold the media accountable for sloppy reporting that relies on anonymous sources with no track record.

“It goes to our original promise on Day One to hold the media accountable,” Leavitt said. “Because unfortunately, and we deal with this all day, every day around here, there are so many fake stories that are unfortunately written.”

She, and others at the briefing, argued that the standard for journalism has dropped and that anonymous sourcing is frequently abused. Leavitt described a pattern where an unverified tip is enough to place a sensational claim on the front page, even when the source has no credibility and no firsthand knowledge.

“That have inaccurate characterizations of meetings that took place, and it’s all based on anonymous sourcing,” she added. “And the standard for journalism, unfortunately, has dropped to such a historic low in this country.”

“And again we deal with this every day,” Leavitt continued. “Where you can have an anonymous source who has no idea what they’re talking about, zero credibility, call up a reporter in Washington and say ‘Hey, I heard this.’ And then the next thing you know, it’s on the front page of the New York Times. It’s really incomprehensible.”

The administration pointed readers to a White House database that collects examples of what it calls biased or misleading coverage, presenting what officials say are documents and timelines that contradict those reports. The effort is meant to compile evidence showing where the White House believes outlets have departed from factual reporting, and to highlight inconsistencies in coverage.

Leavitt said the White House will continue to push back when a story misrepresents events or relies on unverifiable accounts, and she warned that reporters who lean on anonymous sourcing will be named when necessary. The frequent theme of the briefing was accountability: the idea that the press must be held to a higher standard and that contradictory official records deserve scrutiny.

In presenting its counter-narrative, the White House repeatedly insisted its own documentation supports the president’s health and daily activities. Officials described the pushback not as an attack on journalism, but as a demand for fairness and consistent application of verification before publication.
