Democrats are threatening a government shutdown by insisting on measures that would curtail immigration enforcement, including barring ICE from certain “sensitive locations” and requiring judicial warrants, and Republicans warn those demands would undermine public safety and essential services while protecting illegal immigrants even when crimes are involved.

The current fight centers on funding for the Department of Homeland Security and, by extension, Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Republican leaders say Democrats have presented a list of demands that would dramatically change how immigration enforcement operates, and they view that list as a political gambit to force concessions.
