This article recounts a tense weekend at a Newark immigration facility where anti-ICE protesters clashed with law enforcement, faced arrests and crowd-control tactics, and watched their makeshift camp get dismantled amid bad weather and police action.

Activists gathered outside the Delaney Hall ICE facility with the goal of disrupting operations and drawing attention to immigration enforcement. Their presence was confrontational from the start, and a handful of protesters chose to block vehicle traffic despite the obvious risk. That decision set the tone for a confrontational encounter with a transport officer who made his displeasure clear in a way that was captured on video.

Tensions escalated quickly and included physical altercations. Four people were arrested by federal agents on charges described as assault, obstruction, or threats, while an additional person was taken into custody by local police. Department of Homeland Security leadership publicly confirmed those arrests, underscoring that the standoff moved beyond a protest into a series of alleged criminal incidents.

The following day, authorities tightened restrictions around the ICE site, with officers reportedly enforcing limits on masks and backpacks in nearby streets. Those limits were framed as public-safety measures and a way to reduce risks to officers and bystanders. Protesters reacted angrily to the enforcement, claiming the rules were designed to silence or intimidate them rather than to maintain order.

When crowd-control measures entered the picture, tempers flared even more. ICE and local police used nonlethal tools in an attempt to disperse the crowd, including pepper balls, a tactic that inflamed protesters and drew sharp reactions on the ground. Video from the scene shows demonstrators struggling with the aftereffects and trying to shield themselves while still trying to film and document what was happening.

That kind of policing only heightened the sense of confrontation, and the protesters’ frustration was visible and vocal. Some participants shouted at officers and demanded that their actions be recorded. One activist screams, “They’re crippling our supplies. Take pictures of this, take pictures of this!” as tensions rose and people scrambled to preserve evidence of the encounter.

At another point a protester shouted, “You were just following orders,” she screamed at the police. The response from authorities was to declare an unlawful assembly and begin the process of clearing the area. Officers moved methodically to dismantle tents and push people back from the immediate perimeter of the ICE facility, aiming to reassert control after the earlier incidents and arrests.

Nature compounded the protesters’ problems when sudden winds undermined the camp they had set up, scattering belongings and making a tense situation even more chaotic. A gusty storm toppled temporary shelters and left tents in tatters, and for many of the activists that felt like a symbolic and literal collapse of their efforts. Videos from the scene show people trying to salvage materials while officers continued to press them to leave the area.

As the day turned to night, officers intensified their efforts to clear the encampment. Police advances forced those who remained to either comply or face arrest, and the camp was gradually dismantled as officials removed blankets, tents, and personal items. The crowd dwindled under the combined pressure of law enforcement action and worsening weather, leaving behind a quieter scene and a facility still in operation.

Several moments from the confrontation were captured on camera and circulated widely, contributing to an immediate public debate about protest tactics and law enforcement responses. Some viewers argued that the protesters had brought the outcome on themselves by blocking vehicles and escalating their actions, while others saw the police response as heavy-handed. Whatever the interpretation, the result was clear: the protest failed to dislodge the ICE presence at Delaney Hall.

The clashes produced a mix of arrests, heated exchanges, and property loss, plus a string of images and clips that will likely be replayed as both sides push their narratives. For activists the weekend was a setback; for authorities it was a demonstration of control under pressure. ICE continues to operate at the site, and organizers will have to weigh the cost of similar direct-action tactics against any potential gains.
