Former President Donald Trump made a direct appeal to New York voters, promising to restore state and local tax (SALT) deductions if he is reelected.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump highlighted his upcoming rally at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, New York, and vowed to “turn” the state around, asking voters what they “have to lose.”
“Nassau Coliseum on Long Island will be a really big deal tomorrow,” Trump wrote. “It will be PACKED with Patriots! We have a real chance of winning New York for the first time in many decades. Hundreds of thousands of Migrants, crime at record levels, terrorists pouring in, inflation eating your hearts out – WHAT THE HELL DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE? VOTE FOR TRUMP! I will turn it around, get SALT back, lower your taxes, and so much more.”
The SALT deduction, in place since the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913, allows taxpayers to deduct state and local taxes from their federal taxable income.
However, it has been controversial, as it primarily benefits taxpayers in Democrat-leaning states with higher income and property taxes.
According to previous reports by Breitbart News, just ten states account for 62% of SALT deductions, with taxpayers in those states receiving an average of $4,200, compared to a $2,300 average deduction in the other 40 states.
The 2017 Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act imposed a $10,000 cap on SALT deductions, which has been a point of contention, especially in high-tax states like New York.
Earlier this year, the House blocked a bill that would have temporarily raised the SALT deduction cap.
In his message, Trump also said he would work alongside New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams to ensure the necessary funding is in place to rejuvenate the state.
He emphasized his goal of restoring New York to its former prosperity, stating, “The funding will be there to bring the state back to levels it hasn’t seen for 50 years.”
Trump ended his post with a hopeful note, expressing his desire to reverse the trend of people leaving New York. “People are fleeing, maybe we’ll get them to ‘flee back!’” he said.
He invited supporters to join him at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for his rally on Wednesday at 7 P.M. EST.
