I lay out what happened in Portland when federal Border Patrol agents shot two people, how local Democrats immediately blamed ICE and the Trump administration, how officials issued statements before facts were confirmed, and what the Department of Homeland Security later said about the incident and the Tren de Aragua connection.

On Thursday afternoon, Customs and Border Protection agents were involved in a shooting in Portland that left two people wounded. The event unfolded just after news of another federal-agent shooting in Minneapolis, which amplified reactions here even though the federal agency involved in Portland was not initially identified. Local leaders raced to frame the incident politically before basic facts were clear.

Portland Police Bureau Chief Bob Day was careful to note the city police were not involved in immigration matters and that the FBI was leading the federal investigation. His statement emphasized that the Portland Police Bureau was providing minimal perimeter and investigative support while making clear the matter was a federal responsibility.

This is a federal investigation, it’s being led by the FBI, we have been in touch with them, we are in regular contact, this is their responsibility. But when we have these type of events happen in the city, Portland Police Bureau does offer a level of assistance. This is not in any way, shape, or form immigration-related on our end. We do not know the facts of this case, we are simply providing the traditional investigative support and perimeter support, which is minimal. But I do want to make it clear that we are out there but we are not involved in immigration.

Before federal investigators had even announced which agency was involved, Oregon’s political class started pointing fingers at ICE and the federal administration. That reflexive politicizing of a developing scene set the tone and distracted from the core issue: an attempted attack on law enforcement personnel. The optics mattered more to many officials than waiting for the facts.

Mayor Keith Wilson released a strongly worded statement referencing recent violence and invoking fears of militarized federal forces operating here. His remarks echoed national Democrats’ familiar script about federal agents and federal overreach, calling for ICE to stop operations pending an investigation. The mayor framed the incident as another strike against community safety by Washington’s policies.

Just one day after the horrific violence in Minnesota at the hands of federal agents, our community here in Portland is now grappling with another deeply troubling incident. Earlier this afternoon, two people were shot and injured by federal agents in the Hazelwood neighborhood.

Several state and federal Democrats piled on, demanding investigations and threatening legal action before the federal response was public. Their intent was clear: seize the narrative, mobilize constituents, and pressure federal agencies regardless of the unfolding evidence. That kind of politicized response undermines law enforcement and sends the wrong message to agents operating in dangerous situations.

Some statements from local Democrats included profanity and heated language, underscoring how emotionally charged the reaction became. Oregon State Senate Leader Kayse Jama reportedly told ICE to “Get the hell out of our community,” language that inflames tensions instead of calming residents. Heated rhetoric from elected officials in the immediate wake of violent incidents only escalates risk for officers and civilians.

Congresswoman Maxine Dexter posted a statement that assumed ICE involvement and painted the incident as part of an authoritarian playbook. Her words accused federal immigration authorities of injecting “terror, chaos, and cruelty” into communities, despite the uncertainty about which agency was actually involved. That kind of casting of blame before verification reflects a willingness to substitute political theater for due process.

Just one day after the horrific murder in Minneapolis, I received reports that two people in my district were shot by federal immigration officials this afternoon in East Portland. Both individuals are alive, but we do not know the extent of their injuries.

ICE has done nothing but inject terror, chaos, and cruelty in our communities. Trump’s immigration machine is using violence to control our communities — straight out of the authoritarian playbook.

Critics noted the mismatch between early political statements and the later factual record. Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin pointed out that some politicians reacted without waiting for any facts, condemning ICE when the shooting involved Border Patrol. The difference between agencies matters to accountability, tactics, and jurisdiction, and leaping to conclusions muddies public understanding.

This is what happens when politicians put out statements without waiting for any facts.

“ICE must end all operations in Portland…” & bashes ICE etc.

But this shooting wasn’t even ICE. It was Border Patrol. Completely different agencies. & DHS says they were targeting TdA.

Hours later, the Department of Homeland Security posted details attributing the stop to U.S. Border Patrol agents and identified one occupant as a Venezuelan national affiliated with the Tren de Aragua criminal network. DHS said agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop, that the driver attempted to use the vehicle as a weapon, and that an agent fired a defensive shot while fearing for his life. The department described the incident as evolving and promised more information.

At 2:19 PST, US Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop in Portland, Oregon. The passenger of the vehicle and target is a Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and involved in a recent shooting in Portland. The vehicle driver is believed to be a member of the vicious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents.

Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot. The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene.

This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.

Regardless of the facts, many Democrats had already mobilized outrage and legal threats, calling for a “full investigation” and immediate curbs on federal operations. That knee-jerk strategy treats federal law enforcement as a political problem rather than a public safety tool, and it discourages the careful, fact-driven oversight real investigations require. Politicians who rush to assign blame before facts are known let ideology trump public safety.
