Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, the sole Republican challenger in the race against incumbent failure Karen Bass and Democrat Socialists of America city councilwoman Nithya Raman, is riding a wave of good news. When the latest campaign finance reports were released last week, Pratt had outraised both Bass and Raman. Then a Los Angeles legend, Lakers governor (and daughter of Jerry) Jeanie Buss, .

Then on Wednesday, Pratt released what is probably one of the best 30-second “political” ads of all time. I put quotes around the word “political” because its power is that it’s not a stunt, not a political speech, not a polls-driven, talking-point-filled cringefest.

It’s a message from a dad who lost almost everything (thank God he still has his wife and kids) speaking from his heart, and knowing that millions of Angelenos feel the same way. He stands in front of the homes of Karen Bass(well, Getty House, which is LA’s mayoral mansion) and Nithya Raman, both tucked away from the reality most residents have to confront every time they leave home, then shows his own home: a trailer he recently had placed on his burned-out lot in Pacific Palisades.

Pratt narrates the video. “This is where Mayor Bass lives. ‘Ya notice something?”

“Or here, where Nithya Raman’s $3 million mansion sits.”

“They don’t have to live in the mess they created – where you live.

Then to his own home. “This is where I live.”

You can hear the emotion in his voice as he says, “They let my home burn down. I know what the consequences of failed leadership are. That’s why I’m running for mayor. For my sons and the rest of us Angelenos that want to stop these corrupt politicians from destroying our city. We are gonna get the golden age of Los Angeles back.”

Both Bass and Raman have attacked Pratt as a washed-up reality star, which is ironic, because Raman’s husband is a television producer (known for “30 Rock”), and Raman’s only career before being elected to city council was as an “organizer,” despite having degrees from both Harvard and MIT.

The Los Angeles Times published a “just asking questions” hit piece on Pratt last month, saying the fact that he and his wife and children have been staying at his parents’ beach house in Santa Barbara County since the fires “raises questions” about his eligibility to run for the office, without naming anybody who’d actually asked the question, and without even asking the LA County Registrar for an opinion on that question. Pratt’s kept his Pacific Palisades address as his residence on the voter file the entire time, which disaster victims are allowed to do, so it’s not an issue. But he , and, like any good reality star, he took her attack, turned it around, and shoved it in her face by placing the trailer on the burned-out lot and using it as his campaign headquarters and home.

Raman’s attacks on Pratt have been increasingly personal. In the wake of the third attempt on President Donald Trump’s life (by a man radicalized in Los Angeles), her post from Monday calling him “a threat to Los Angeles and the immigrants who built their lives here” is irresponsible at best, and could be construed as calling for violence against Pratt.

Both Raman and Bass made a really bad choice by personalizing the race against Pratt, a man who has more experience with media in general, in public relations, and in dealing with hostile media than either of them could ever dream of having, a man who was “canceled” before there was such a thing, and a man who already lost all of his material possessions.

By the looks of things, the normal people in Los Angeles have received the message.
