Former CIA Director John Brennan finds himself at the center of an investigation, a situation he claims to be baffled by. Both Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey are under scrutiny for their potential roles in the handling of the Steele dossier. This dossier was pivotal in the FBI’s 2016 investigation into alleged Russian collusion with Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” Brennan expressed his surprise at the lack of contact from investigators. He emphasized his willingness to cooperate, stating, “If there is an investigation then people will be questioned. I would be questioned about it.” Brennan highlighted his history of testifying before multiple congressional committees as part of his transparency.

Brennan maintains that the intelligence community acted to protect the electoral process, not to influence it. The former director stated, “We tried to make sure we stayed true to our intelligence responsibilities.” He added that their aim was to avoid interference in the election, reinforcing the integrity of their actions.

Despite the controversy, Brennan praised the intelligence community’s efforts during the challenging period surrounding the election. He asserted, “The people who actually worked this… showed the best of what the intelligence community and what CIA is made of.” Brennan expressed confusion over the investigation’s focus on him, reiterating, “I am clueless about what it is exactly that they may be investigating me for.”

Current CIA Director John Ratcliffe has taken action by referring evidence of Brennan’s alleged misconduct to FBI Director Kash Patel. This decision follows a declassified review of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which identified “procedural anomalies.” These anomalies reportedly allowed deviations from established standards.

In 2023, Brennan allegedly misled Congress by denying his approval of the Steele dossier’s inclusion in the ICA. However, newly declassified information from Ratcliffe suggests otherwise, indicating that Brennan had indeed advocated for its inclusion. This revelation further complicates Brennan’s current predicament.

James Comey, on the other hand, admitted during a 2018 testimony that the FBI used the unverified dossier to secure spy warrants against Trump campaign adviser Carter Page. Comey later testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2020, claiming ignorance of issues surrounding Igor Danchenko, the primary source for the dossier. These contradictions have intensified scrutiny on the actions of both former directors.
