The second season of “Marshals,” the “Yellowstone” spinoff that sends its story into Wyoming, opened Sunday with the death of a major character in a brutal car crash.

Spoilers follow for anyone who hasn’t watched the premiere, titled “All Hat No Cattle.”

Dolly Weaver, played by Ellie Jameson, was killed after the vehicle she was riding in rolled down a mountainside. The episode began with Dolly and U.S. Marshal Kayce Dutton, played by Luke Grimes, at East Camp, where they were ambushed by her father Tom Weaver’s attorney and two other men. Tom, played by Chris Mulkey, wanted Dutton’s land badly enough to kidnap Dutton’s son, Tate, played by Brecken Merrill, and threaten the boy’s life to get it.

Before putting down the three attackers at East Camp, Kayce told them, “Tom wins. East Camp’s his. Just give me my son back.”

He then turned on Dolly, his romantic interest in the series, demanding to know whether she had known about Tate’s kidnapping all along. She denied it and pointed Kayce toward the Wyoming property where the boy was being held.

When Kayce phoned Tom ahead of the 300-mile drive and agreed to sign over his land, Tom warned him, “If you try anything, I will paint the walls with your daughter.”

Kayce arrived at the Wyoming property to find dozens of armed men waiting. In the shootout that followed, Dolly abruptly sided with her father against Kayce, even as Kayce ultimately rescued Tate. Tom then tried to flee by truck with Dolly inside. Kayce cut off the escape and offered Tom a chance to surrender — but the truck went over the edge of a mountain instead, killing Dolly in the crash.

Afterward, Kayce told Tom, “Living with Dolly’s death is the punishment you deserve,” and later added that Dolly’s “only sin was not being able to break away from family.”

The episode closed with Kayce and Tate returning to East Camp.

New episodes of “Marshals” air Sundays on CBS at 8 p.m. ET and stream the next day on Paramount+.
