Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko publicly criticized a section of the program’s fan base following the team’s 27-6 loss at Missouri on Saturday, a defeat that dropped the Aggies to 3-3 on the season.
Texas A&M opened 2026 ranked eighth in the country, with expectations of a second straight College Football Playoff appearance after an 11-1 record in 2025 and the return of senior quarterback Marcel Reed. Those expectations have unraveled before the midway point of October.
Asked during his postgame press conference what he would say to fans losing faith in the team, Elko drew a distinction between the broader fan base and a specific online community.
“There’s a difference to me between the fan base and social media. So there’s one group that I really don’t care much about. Billy’s cesspool can go be Billy’s cesspool,” Elko said. “Our fan base, stay with us, be behind us. We’re going to build something that we told you we were going to build. So we’re in a really bad spot right now, but we’ll work our way out of it.”
Elko’s reference was to TexAgs, a message board and community site operated by executive editor Billy Liucci, who has covered Texas A&M athletics for decades. TexAgs has more than 350,000 followers combined on X and Facebook, along with thousands of paid subscribers.
The remark, delivered minutes after a third loss effectively ended the Aggies’ playoff hopes, drew attention given the size and influence of the community Elko singled out.
Texas A&M’s remaining schedule includes road trips to Alabama and Oklahoma, as well as home matchups against Tennessee and Texas.
