A Sierra Leonean national who entered the United States illegally in 2023 and was released from custody on two separate occasions is now facing charges after allegedly stabbing a 15-year-old girl repeatedly and attempting to kidnap her from a Baltimore home.
The Baltimore Police Department says Abubakarr Barrie, 23, picked up the girl and, according to the Department of Homeland Security, took her to “a basement property that he was renting at the time.” Once inside, he allegedly stabbed her over and over until she managed to break free and run for help. Multiple reports indicate Barrie worked as an unlicensed cab driver.
The attack took place on Oct. 22. Barrie was arrested two days later, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer against him that same day.
This was not the first time federal immigration authorities had sought to take custody of Barrie. Earlier this year, the New York Police Department arrested him on a charge of third-degree possession of a forged instrument. ICE lodged a detainer at that time as well, but New York City officials released him in July rather than turning him over.
DHS says Barrie crossed into the country illegally near Arizona in December 2023, where he was arrested by Border Patrol agents and subsequently released under the Biden administration.
DHS Points to Pattern of Releases
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin tied the Baltimore attack directly to the earlier releases, saying the case illustrates a chain of policy failures at both the federal and local level.
“This tragedy would never have happened were it not for the multiple failures of sanctuary policies. First, Biden’s open borders let this monster into our country, then sanctuary politicians in New York refused to hand him over to ICE and released him after a previous arrest three months before this horrific crime. DHS is urging Baltimore County authorities to learn from sanctuary New York’s mistakes, honor ICE’s detainer against this illegal alien, and prevent him from harming any more Americans.”
Fox News Digital has reached out to the NYPD and the City of New York for comment. It remains to be seen whether Baltimore-area authorities will honor the ICE detainer now lodged against Barrie.
