Sen. Warner Blasts Trump’s Iran Military Action as ‘Disaster on Every Front’

Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) said Tuesday that the Trump administration’s military action against Iran “is a disaster on every front,” pointing to rising fuel prices, unresolved enriched uranium stockpiles and what he described as an absence of any strategy for ending U.S. involvement.

Warner made the remarks during an appearance on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.” Co-host Jonathan Lemire had noted that President Trump has sent conflicting signals, at times threatening to “annihilate Iran” while also suggesting negotiations would soon resume and the conflict would end quickly. Lemire said rising prices tied to the conflict suggested the situation had become “a complete and utter stalemate.”

Warner responded by framing the conflict as a war launched without adequate planning.

“Well, this is what happens when you start a war of choice without a plan. You know, they wanted to change the regime. Well, they killed the last guys, but the current guys are worse than before,” Warner said.

He said the enriched uranium issue remains unresolved, arguing that removing it would have required a large ground presence.

“We don’t have any activity to get the enriched uranium. It would have required 15,000 troops on the ground getting those canisters out while the Iranians were bombing us. They still have missiles and drones,” Warner said.

He also criticized the cost of the U.S. response to Iranian drone threats, contrasting it with technology used in Ukraine.

“We turn down Ukrainian technology, which could have taken down Iranian drones at $5,000 a pop. We’re spending $2.5 million per missile to take down some of those, some of those drones,” he said.

Warner tied the conflict directly to domestic costs, citing gas and diesel prices along with mortgage rates.

“And clearly we’ve got $4.50 gas, we’ve got $6.40 diesel. And I don’t see any scenario, even if the president declares victory tomorrow, where at the end of the day, Iran is not going to extract some kind of toll coming from oil and natural gas that will come out of that area,” Warner said. “This war is a disaster on every front. The American people know it. It’s driving up inflation, you know, mortgage rates at 7%. And candidly, I have not heard any plan at all on how to extract ourselves. That’s a disaster.”

Warner did not lay out an alternative course of action during the appearance, but his remarks amounted to a direct challenge to the administration to explain how and when U.S. involvement in the conflict will end.
