The U.S. Embassy in Oslo suffered a violent incident in the early hours of Sunday that left the embassy entrance heavily damaged but caused no reported injuries, and Norwegian authorities are treating the event as a serious criminal matter amid heightened international tensions.
Around 01:03 local time, neighbors reported a “loud bang” near the embassy and emergency services responded immediately, finding significant damage at the entrance area that officials say was “likely caused by some form of explosive device.” Witnesses described seeing thick smoke near the consular section, and authorities launched a rapid on-scene investigation with technical teams and search units. The police emphasize that while damage is extensive, there are no reported injuries so far.
The Oslo Police District has mobilized substantial resources, deploying dogs, drones, and helicopters to search for one or more potential perpetrators. Investigators are pursuing several lines of inquiry and say they are in the early stages of the case, keeping multiple hypotheses on the table. Officials are coordinating with national investigative bodies and the American Embassy as the situation develops.
Norwegian police are investigating an apparent explosion at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo that caused no injuries and only minor damage.
Amid the war on Iran, Norwegian Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen is deploying “considerable resources” to search for potential multiple perpetrators.
“This is an unacceptable incident that we are taking very seriously,” she told Norwegian press agency NTB.
A “loud bang” was reported at the U.S. Embassy in Oslo at 1 a.m. Sunday local time (Saturday 7 p.m. ET), according to police, and eyewitnesses told Reuters that they saw thick smoke by the entrance of the consular section.
Norwegian officials explicitly note they are working “based on multiple hypotheses” and, given the “current security situation,” are considering whether the embassy was the target of a deliberate attack. The police statement stresses cooperation with security services and the American Embassy, and asks the public for observations from the relevant time period. While no suspects have been identified yet, the police say they are searching for one or more perpetrators.
What follows is a transcription of the statement from Head of the Joint Unit for Investigation and Intelligence, Frode Larsen at Oslo Police District during the press conference at Noon on Sunday, March 8.
Welcome to the press briefing at the police headquarters.
At approximately 01:03 last night, the police received a report from neighbors in the area about an explosion/loud bang near the American Embassy in Oslo.
The police and emergency services responded quickly, deploying significant resources to the scene.
At the location, there is extensive material damage to the entrance area of the embassy, likely caused by some form of explosive device. There are no reported injuries. We are in the early stages of the investigation and are pursuing several lines of inquiry.
Investigations have been carried out at the scene, and searches have been conducted with dogs, drones, and helicopters for one or more potential perpetrators. We have performed both technical and tactical crime scene work.
We have now mobilized substantial resources to support the ongoing investigation.
For the time being, the Oslo Police District is responsible for the investigation. We currently have no suspects, but we are looking for one or more perpetrators. We are cooperating closely with Police Security Service, National Criminal Investigation Service, and the American Embassy.
We are early in the investigation, but we are working based on multiple hypotheses. Given the current security situation, it is natural to consider whether this was a targeted attack on the American Embassy. However, we have not committed to any single hypothesis.
We do not wish to release further details at this time, as the investigation is still in its early phase. We have already received many helpful tips from the public, but we encourage more information regarding observations from the relevant time period.
The police take incidents of this nature in public spaces extremely seriously and are investigating the case with significant resources and high priority.
A number of measures have been implemented following last night’s incident.
This event arrives during a tense international period, when U.S. diplomatic posts have been on heightened alert after a string of overseas incidents. In recent weeks there have been attacks and attempted attacks against American diplomats and facilities in other regions, and security teams have been working to harden embassies and consulates worldwide. That context makes any explosion near a U.S. mission especially concerning to both host-nation authorities and American officials.
Norwegian Justice Minister Astri Aas-Hansen described the response as significant, saying her ministry has dedicated “considerable resources” to the search for perpetrators. Local police are treating the matter seriously and have appealed for public assistance, asking anyone with relevant footage or observations to come forward to aid the investigation. Authorities warn the case remains fluid and details may change as new evidence is processed.
For conservatives watching this unfold, the incident underscores the need for clear, decisive defense of American interests overseas and strong support for allies who host U.S. diplomatic missions. Embassies are symbols of national sovereignty and safety for Americans abroad, and any attack on them calls for an uncompromising investigative and security response. Until investigators release more information, officials will continue their methodical work to identify motives and actors.
At the scene, forensic teams carried out both technical and tactical work, and trained units combed the area for clues. Police emphasized that while they are cooperating with national agencies and the American Embassy, the Oslo Police District is leading the inquiry at this stage. The public is urged to provide tips that could help locate suspects or clarify what happened in the moments around the explosion.
