Piner High Walkout Over Football Captain’s ‘Cornell 7’ Post Leaves Discipline Question Unanswered

More than 200 students walked out of class Friday at Piner Junior Senior High School in Santa Rosa, demanding to know whether their school had actually punished a football team captain who posted “Free the Cornell 7” on Instagram earlier this month.

The phrase refers to seven students accused of gang raping a Cornell University student at a fraternity party in 2024, a case that has already drawn protests in Los Angeles, Seattle and Philadelphia from demonstrators who say Cornell mishandled its investigation.

Students at Piner organized the walkout because they believed the captain had faced no real consequences for the post, according to The Press Democrat.

An anonymous parent of a Piner cheerleader told the newspaper that the captain was kept off the team’s Thursday night dinner, but said they had no knowledge of any other discipline. Neither the school nor the district has laid out publicly what, if anything, happened beyond that.

That silence is the crux of the matter. Students walked because they wanted accountability made visible, and so far the record shows only the one exclusion. SFGATE likewise reported that it is unclear whether further disciplinary steps were taken.

A team already short-handed

The controversy landed the same week Piner’s football program hit a separate wall: the Prospectors forfeited their Saturday game against Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo.

Head coach Adam Rosenstein told The Press Democrat the team had only five healthy linemen left to field. The forfeit was confirmed Friday evening.

The forfeit drops Piner to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play, per MaxPreps.

For now, the two stories — the walkout over an unresolved disciplinary question, and a team sidelined by injuries — are running on parallel tracks at the same school, with students still waiting for the district to say plainly what was done about the post.
