Unranked Oklahoma knocked off top-ranked Texas 27-24 in the Red River Rivalry on Saturday in Dallas, handing the Longhorns their first loss of the season after a fourth quarter marked by two interceptions from Texas quarterback Arch Manning.
Texas opened strong behind a 41-yard touchdown run and throw from Manning, taking a 17-7 lead into halftime after Oklahoma answered in the second quarter. But the Longhorns offense stalled after the break while Oklahoma’s came alive.
Oklahoma kicked a field goal in the third quarter, then tied the game with a touchdown run from Lloyd Avant to open the fourth. On Texas’s next drive, Manning’s overthrown pass was picked off by Peyton Bowen and returned 42 yards for a touchdown, putting Oklahoma ahead 24-17 with 10:07 remaining.
Manning responded, connecting with Cam Coleman on a 42-yard pass and then finding Jermaine Bishop Jr. to tie the score at 24 with 6:32 left. Texas forced a punt and drove into position for a potential go-ahead score, but a 52-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right, giving Oklahoma the ball at its own 35 with 1:54 remaining.
Texas got the ball back after an Oklahoma punt and had a chance to win the game outright, but Manning threw another interception in the fourth quarter, his second of the period. Oklahoma then moved into field-goal range on consecutive pass plays with nine seconds left, and Tate Sandell converted a 47-yard field goal as time expired for the 27-24 win.
The defeat was Texas’s first of the season and cost the Longhorns their standing as the top team in the SEC, with Alabama and Georgia, both 5-0 heading into their own matchup later Saturday, now positioned ahead of them. Oklahoma improved to 3-2 on the season as it continues pursuing a spot in the College Football Playoff.
