Democrats in Michigan are trying to avoid questions about their nominee’s ties to Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, a controversy that has spilled into a heated television exchange involving Piker’s uncle, media personality Cenk Uygur.
Michigan Democratic gubernatorial nominee Abdul El-Sayed solicited Piker to campaign for him, and the association has become a liability for the party. El-Sayed and fellow Democrats have avoided naming Piker directly in public remarks, instead referring to him only as “a streamer from California.”
Piker, a California-based Twitch personality and nephew of “The Young Turks” host Cenk Uygur, has drawn criticism for previously stating “I hate America” and saying he made the remark with his “full chest.” He has also displayed a picture of the burning Twin Towers behind his desk during broadcasts.
A heated exchange on live television
The controversy escalated into a public confrontation on Piers Morgan’s show, where former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel told Uygur directly that she does not like people such as Piker who say they “hate America.”
During the exchange, Uygur attempted to shift the conversation toward Republican Michigan Senate nominee Mike Rogers, raising unrelated allegations. As the discussion continued, Uygur’s chair broke on air, a moment captured on video and widely shared afterward.

Piker also faces separate criticism
Separately, Piker was criticized this week by former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt during an exchange described by observers as pointed and combative.
The controversy comes as Democratic candidates in Michigan continue to face questions about their associations with Piker, whose remarks about the United States have become a recurring point of criticism from Republicans heading into the election cycle.
