A 20-year-old Haitian migrant died Monday after walking into oncoming highway traffic and being struck by a tractor-trailer, according to reports. Pierre Damas Bel had been living in the United States under Temporary Protected Status before the Trump administration moved to end that protection for Haitians.

Bel died sometime Monday morning. His family says they believe his death was a suicide, and that he had been distraught over losing his temporary protected status, which put him at risk of deportation back to Haiti.

The case has drawn national attention after MS NOW commentator Peter Alexander spoke about Bel on air, referencing what he described as Bel’s “dreams of earning a degree in medicine” and saying that “policy is personal.”

A Familiar Political Divide

The death has quickly become another flashpoint in the ongoing national argument over immigration enforcement. Critics of the administration’s decision to end TPS protections for Haitians argue that removing legal status from people who have built lives in the U.S. carries real human consequences, including cases like Bel’s.

Defenders of the policy note that Temporary Protected Status was designed, as its name states, to be temporary rather than a permanent pathway to residency, and argue that enforcement of immigration law is a legitimate function of government that voters have demanded be restored after years of expanded migration under the previous administration.

Both sides of the debate have used Bel’s death to make broader arguments about immigration policy, enforcement practices, and the human toll of status changes affecting hundreds of thousands of TPS holders nationwide.

No additional details about the circumstances of Bel’s death, including any official determination of cause, have been publicly confirmed beyond his family’s account.
