The Islamic Center of San Diego was rocked by a midday attack that left three people dead and raised urgent questions about motive, planning, and how early assumptions shaped public reaction; this article summarizes the known facts, what investigators have found about the attackers and their writings, and how footage and recovered materials factor into the ongoing probe.

Police say the shooting occurred just before noon Pacific time and killed three people, including a security guard named Amin Abdullah, who “played a pivotal role” in protecting others at the scene. Initial reports identified the assailants as two teenagers discovered shortly afterward in a nearby vehicle, both with apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

Authorities have identified the pair as 17-year-old Cain Lee Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Liam Vazquez, with earlier reporting that used a different last name corrected. Investigators say the teens met online and were radicalized over time, and that weapons used in the attack were among a cache reportedly taken from a parent; officials also reported that the teens had stockpiled 30 guns and a crossbow.

In the first hours after the attack, San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl told reporters, “There was definitely hate rhetoric involved,” a statement that framed early media coverage and public discussion. But new material that surfaced from what is being described as an alleged manifesto has complicated initial characterizations of the shooters’ ideology and targets.

Pages of that alleged manifesto were circulated on social media by an activist and included passages suggesting the attackers were scouting for “diverse targets” and considering multiple locations. The document also linked antipathy toward more than one religious group, stating that “For the people asking, ‘If they hated Jews, why attack an Islamic Center?’ because just like the KKK, they hated BOTH Muslims and Jews.”

Investigators say footage captured part of the incident and shows violent actions between the two suspects toward the end of the episode. One report notes that Clark shot Vazquez before taking his own life; the published description of the footage reads, “After carrying out the attack that killed three people — including a security guard who was praised for saving countless others — the video shows Clark, wearing camouflage, fatally shooting Vazquez before taking his own life.”

The manifesto and the video together have prompted investigators to look at motive as a mixture of violent, extremist symbolism and a desire to hit multiple kinds of targets. According to a translated section of the document, the attackers left some choices to chance while mapping out “diverse targets” and appearing to embrace symbols associated with neo-Nazi groups, even as they targeted non-Jewish worshippers.

Law enforcement sources say the teens were found a few blocks from the mosque in a car and that initial indications point to self-inflicted wounds in both deaths. The presence of neo-Nazi insignias on weapons and gear seen in video and the reported stockpile of firearms raise questions about access to weapons and the influence of online extremism on impressionable youths.

Community leaders and mosque officials have praised the quick action of those who helped others escape, and local authorities continue to investigate how the suspects planned the attack and where they obtained weapons. The manifest material and the footage are now part of that probe as investigators work to establish motive, timeline, and any outside influences or accomplices.

Court records, interviews, and forensic findings are expected to shape the next phase of inquiry as prosecutors and police sort through conflicting narratives and the contents of the alleged manifesto. The case remains fluid, with officials urging patience while they confirm details and determine what led two teenagers to carry out such a lethal assault.
