Hunter Biden Replaces Lawyer with High-Profile Defender

Hunter Biden, embroiled in legal battles yet again, is now swapping his legal representation. His new attorney, Dick Harpootlian, steps in to replace Abbe Lowell. Harpootlian, a South Carolina Democrat known for defending controversial figures like Alex Murdaugh, is taking on Hunter’s defamation lawsuit against former Overstock CEO Patrick Byrne.

Harpootlian proudly identifies as a “Joe Biden guy,” and he’s now focusing on securing a win for Hunter in the upcoming July trial. Fox News reports that Hunter is pursuing this defamation case because Byrne accused him of inappropriate ties with Iran in 2021. In January 2024, Hunter appeared before The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability to address allegations of contempt for ignoring a subpoena.

Harpootlian confirmed to The State that he’s now leading Hunter’s case against Byrne. The lawsuit alleges Byrne falsely claimed Hunter attempted to negotiate a bribe with Iranian officials to unfreeze $8 billion in assets, supposedly with President Biden’s approval. Hunter maintains that these accusations significantly damaged his financial prospects.

Hunter claims he lost significant income from book deals, art sales, and speaking engagements due to Byrne’s accusations. Meanwhile, his financial struggles are becoming increasingly apparent. According to ABC News, Hunter’s art career has stalled, and he’s facing mounting legal expenses from previous cases managed by Lowell.

Once known for his lavish lifestyle, Hunter is now battling conservative critics over his financial troubles. Harpootlian, on the other hand, recently faced his own political defeat. He was narrowly defeated in the South Carolina Senate race by Russell Ott, another Democrat who highlighted Harpootlian’s defense of Murdaugh.

Despite losing in more liberal areas like Richland County, Ott’s support in rural Calhoun County secured his victory. Harpootlian, however, remains undeterred. Reflecting on his loss, he stated, “We went through a process… I lost. The process worked. I’m not accusing anybody of stealing anything.”

It’s unclear if Harpootlian’s remarks were aimed at his party or simply acknowledging the election results. At a CrimeCon event, he mentioned he’d rather defend another Murdaugh case pro bono than spend money on luxury. “What’s so astounding about that?” he remarked, highlighting his willingness to take on challenging cases.

Abbe Lowell’s final act for Hunter involved a heated deposition in 2024. During this deposition, he criticized Republicans investigating the Biden family’s alleged corruption. He stated, “They have produced no evidence that would do anything to support the notion that there was any financial transactions that involved Hunter with his father.”

Lowell claimed GOP lawmakers seemed more interested in Hunter’s past struggles with addiction than the allegations surrounding the Biden family. Now, with Harpootlian on board, Hunter hopes to navigate through ongoing legal challenges. The President’s son is banking on courtroom victories to help restore his tarnished reputation.

Hunter’s predicament is a significant topic of discussion, often attracting media attention. His legal troubles and financial issues have become a focal point for critics. As the July trial approaches, all eyes will be on Harpootlian’s strategy to clear Hunter’s name.
