Lawmakers are advancing a major legislative package known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. However, there’s growing concern from public safety experts about its lack of funding for Next Generation 911 (NG911). Mel Maier, executive director of APCO International, emphasizes that this oversight could compromise national security.

NG911 is more than just an upgrade; it’s vital for public safety in an era of global uncertainty. As tensions remain high after U.S. actions against Iran’s nuclear capabilities, the need for modernized emergency communication is clear. Maier stresses, “This bill does many good things,” but warns of the potential risks of ignoring NG911 funding.

The importance of NG911 becomes evident when considering today’s cyber threats. Maier notes that “cyberterrorists and threats are being directed against 911 today.” Ransomware attacks have already hit emergency services across the country, highlighting vulnerabilities in the current system.

Despite these warnings, the current legislative proposal lacks NG911 funding. Maier advocates for bipartisan cooperation to address this issue. There’s optimism, with assurances from Congress on both sides that this is a priority.

Senator Amy Klobuchar has introduced a bill that aligns with public safety needs, yet it lacks a crucial funding source. Maier explains, “Public safety has supported it,” but without funding, progress is stalled. The absence of financial backing remains a significant obstacle.

Funding is critical for the nationwide implementation of NG911. A 2018 federal cost analysis estimated the need at $15 billion. Without this investment, Maier warns of a fragmented emergency response system, creating disparities among states.

Some regions have already invested in NG911 infrastructure, while others lag behind. This results in unequal access to emergency services across the nation. Maier envisions a consistent level of service for all communities, regardless of location.

The current emergency system relies on outdated infrastructure from the ’60s and ’70s. It cannot support modern communication methods like video or geolocation data. NG911 would enable immediate transmission of crucial information to responders.

By implementing NG911, the time it takes for emergency personnel to react could be significantly reduced. Maier argues that the right information, delivered quickly, can save lives. “Next Generation 911, if implemented nationwide today, will save lives today,” he asserts.

Public opinion on the federal budget legislation is divided. According to a recent Fox News poll, 59% of voters oppose it, while only 38% are in favor. The bill narrowly passed in the House of Representatives.

President Donald Trump is urging his party to finalize the tax cuts and spending package swiftly. The goal is to have it signed into law by Independence Day. This legislation reflects many of Trump’s campaign promises.
