A group of House Republicans is using a newly disclosed federal crackdown on food-stamp fraud to make the case, ahead of November’s midterm elections, that taxpayer-funded assistance programs need tighter oversight.
The Justice Department announced October 21 that a nationwide enforcement operation, running since September 1, had targeted nearly $45 million in government losses, almost $42 million of it tied to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) fraud. Thirteen U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Utah Attorney General’s Office took part, and more than 40 defendants now face enforcement actions.
Members of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) told Breitbart News the figures underscore long-standing concerns about accountability in federal benefit programs. Those who commented include Reps. Rob Wittman (R-VA), Glenn Grothman (R-WI), Michael Guest (R-MS) and RSC Chairman August Pfluger (R-TX).
“I remain committed to protecting food assistance for vulnerable Americans while ensuring programs like SNAP are accountable and sustainable,” Wittman said. “The reported $42 million in SNAP fraud is unacceptable, and I applaud the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud for taking action to protect taxpayer dollars and ensure these resources reach Americans who truly need them.”
Grothman placed the blame on the opposing party. “Every taxpayer dollar stolen through SNAP fraud undermines the program’s mission of helping eligible Americans put food on the table. Democrats have failed to prioritize fraud prevention, leaving taxpayer dollars vulnerable to abuse,” he said, adding that savings from rooting out fraud “should go toward reducing the federal deficit.”
Guest, whose home state of Mississippi has more than 350,000 SNAP recipients, framed the loss in terms of lost benefits. “The $42 million in SNAP fraud recently discovered across the nation by the White House Task Force could assist almost 220,000 Americans for a month. That’s enough to support over half of Mississippi’s SNAP recipients,” he said.
Pfluger credited Vice President Vance and the administration’s fraud task force for the speed of the findings. “SNAP exists so a family can put dinner on the table, and every dollar a fraudster steals is a meal taken from people with nowhere else to turn,” he said. “Thanks to Vice President Vance and the White House Task Force on Fraud, nearly $42 million in SNAP fraud has been uncovered in just 7 weeks, and the criminals behind it are about to learn that the free ride is over.”
What the cases involved
According to the Justice Department, the SNAP funds at issue could have fed roughly 220,000 Americans for the month of October, based on fiscal year 2026 USDA figures. The cases span several states and schemes, including an alleged $29.7 million operation involving stolen SNAP account information used at Chicago food stores, and a Georgia case involving rapper Mercedes New tied to an estimated $4.4 million in stolen benefits. Investigators also cited fraudulent benefit applications, SNAP trafficking, resale of infant formula bought with stolen benefits, and exploitation of vulnerable recipients.
Attorney General Todd Blanche said the schemes “siphoned millions from taxpayers and robbed struggling Americans of the benefits they depend on.”
Separately, the Department of Homeland Security announced October 21 that Immigration and Customs Enforcement had launched a nationwide operation targeting undocumented immigrants accused of fraudulently obtaining SNAP benefits. DHS identified five arrests, including nationals of Cuba and Haiti, calling it the start of a broader effort. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the administration is committed to “going after all these thieves and bringing them to justice.”
