HBO’s freshman superhero drama “Lanterns” closes out its first season tonight, Sunday, October 4, 2026, with the finale titled “Dirt and Stars.” The episode, the eighth and last of Season 1, premieres on HBO and HBO Max at 9 PM ET.
The series stars Kyle Chandler as original Green Lantern Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, the man poised to take up the ring after Jordan’s death. Last week’s episode left both characters stranded on a distant planet where encounters with water and mist force people to confront their worst fears. Complicating matters further, Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro also turned up on that world, despite having been imprisoned by the Guardians on the planet Oa.
Tonight’s finale is expected to address two of the season’s central mysteries: who killed Hal Jordan, and how Sinestro escaped confinement. Neither question has been resolved on screen as of the penultimate episode.
“Lanterns” is an HBO exclusive, meaning viewers need an HBO or HBO Max subscription to watch. HBO Max plans start at $10.99 a month with ads, or $18.49 a month ad-free. Viewers looking to bundle services can get HBO Max along with Disney+ and Hulu starting at $19.99 a month with ads, or $32.99 a month without.
HBO has not announced whether “Lanterns” will return for a second season. Separately, Aaron Pierre is confirmed to reprise his role as John Stewart in next summer’s “Man of Tomorrow,” the follow-up to “Superman,” regardless of what happens with the HBO series.
