Former Vice President Kamala Harris said Republicans are “cheating” ahead of the 2026 midterms, pointing to redistricting efforts and voter identification measures as tactics she argues are designed to suppress turnout.
Harris made the comments during an appearance on “What Are You Like?”, a podcast hosted by former U.S. women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe.
“Midterms, midterms, midterms, full-time occupying my thoughts, my mind and my work,” Harris said. “We have to win these midterms. These — these folks are cheating. They’re redrawing lines. They’re trying to make it more difficult for people to vote so they won’t vote because they are afraid of the power of the people.”
She added that she is focused on helping Democrats “restore some balance in our government” by winning back both chambers of Congress.
“And, so, I’m spending full-time working on doing everything I can to help people restore some balance in our government, which is, through the midterms, winning back Congress, the House and the Senate so that we can stop the madness,” Harris told Rapinoe.
Asked what drew her back into public life, Harris said serving in some capacity is central to how she sees herself.
“I don’t know how to live and not serve. I honestly don’t. I just don’t. It’s something I’ve come to terms with. I don’t know how to, I just don’t know a life without figuring out how I can help move the needle,” she said.
What she’s calling “cheating”
Harris’s remarks come as Republicans push measures such as the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship before a person can register to vote and impose identification requirements to confirm a voter’s identity at the polls. Supporters describe these as basic safeguards for election integrity; Harris and other critics frame them as barriers meant to depress turnout among certain groups.
The Republican National Committee responded to Harris’s comments. RNC election integrity communications director Ally Triolo issued a statement to Fox News Digital:
“If Kamala Harris is upset Republicans are going after the illegals and fraudsters trying to vote, it makes you wonder if she’s taking crazy pills again. Voter ID and proof of citizenship are common sense, but Democrats can’t win elections without cheating the system.”
The exchange underscores a broader partisan divide heading into the midterms over what constitutes fair election administration — a debate that includes redistricting fights in several states alongside the push for stricter voter identification and citizenship-verification rules.
