A young Tucson police recruit was killed and his girlfriend wounded in an early-morning attack that has left two suspects at large, a community on edge, and law enforcement asking for help as investigators follow leads and try to locate a vehicle believed to be involved.
The shooting occurred just before 6 a.m. in a neighborhood southwest of Tucson, where deputies responded to a 911 call and found a 23-year-old man dead and a 23-year-old woman wounded. Authorities confirmed the man was a Tucson Police Department recruit and the woman works for the sheriff’s department; the two were engaged and share a child. Officials describe the case as active and are urging anyone with information to come forward as detectives canvass the area.
Witnesses and investigators have been given a description of the suspects: two Hispanic males wearing all black clothing and ski masks. The pair reportedly fled the scene in a gray Acura MDX, and police have asked the public to be on the lookout for that make and model in the area. Small but specific details about the vehicle, such as a missing piece near the gas cap, were highlighted by investigators as potential identifying markers.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos addressed reporters and explained the basic timeline, stressing both the tragedy of the loss and the need for community assistance. He made clear that detectives would remain active in the neighborhood throughout the day, following up tips and examining evidence. The sheriff called the event “a pretty sad day for law enforcement” and asked residents to report anything they might have seen or heard.

Good morning. This is a pretty sad day for law enforcement today.
About 6 o’clock this morning, we received a 911 call from a home in this neighborhood, the 7700 Block of Enchanted Spring [about 17 miles southwest of Tucson].
Deputies responded to the call, found a young 23-year-old man inside, deceased, and his wife [later determined to be his girlfriend], also 23 years old, with a gunshot wound. She’s been transported to a local area hospital. She is in stable condition.
The young man was a member of the Tucson Police Department. The young lady is a member of our [Sheriff’s] department.
This is a pretty active ongoing investigation. I don’t have a lot of detail for you, but I would tell you that we certainly need the public’s help. If they heard something, know something, saw something, please let us know.
Detectives are working it now, they’ll be in the neighborhood throughout the day.
Local media shared images and details about the vehicle authorities believe may be connected to the shooting, and deputies asked anyone with dashcam or doorbell footage from the early-morning hours to review it. The community response has included door-to-door inquiries by deputies and additional patrols in the surrounding neighborhoods. Investigators have not released a motive or a timeline for how long the suspects were in the area before the shooting.
The slain recruit has been identified by law enforcement as Carlos Ramirez, and officials confirmed the woman injured in the incident is being treated and is in stable condition with non-life-threatening wounds. There have been no further identifications released for the suspects, and no arrests reported at this time. Authorities emphasized the unusual and heartbreaking nature of losing a young officer in the line of duty during basic training or early assignment.
Neighbors described a normally quiet street turned tense by the presence of police vehicles and investigators combing yards for evidence. People who live nearby said they heard sirens and saw deputies working through the morning, which added to anxiety across the community. Residents are being asked to remain vigilant and to contact investigators if they recall any suspicious activity from just before dawn onward.
Law enforcement is coordinating efforts across agencies to widen the search and consolidate tips, evidence, and video. Detectives are likely to follow up on leads involving the described gray Acura MDX and the clothing description of the suspects. As this remains an active investigation, officials have limited details to release publicly but have repeatedly appealed for the public’s help to bring the suspects into custody.
BREAKING: PCSD has released photos of a vehicle they believe may be connected to a morning shooting that left TPD recruit Carlos Ramirez dead. They say, “On August 19, 2026, shortly before 6:00 a.m., Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD) San Xavier District deputies responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive.
Authorities continue to request anyone with information, footage, or relevant observations contact investigators immediately so they can close this case quickly. The combination of a young recruit killed, an injured partner, and suspects still free has left family members and colleagues seeking answers. Police stress that even small details can be critical to finding the suspects and achieving justice for the family and department affected by this tragedy.
