Speaker Johnson Accuses CBS of Editing Key Parts of His Interview

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has accused CBS News of selectively editing his recent interview on Face the Nation, joining a growing list of conservative figures raising concerns about media bias. Johnson’s allegations follow in the wake of controversy surrounding a similar incident involving Vice President Kamala Harris, which also centered on accusations of deceptive editing by the network.

According to the New York Post, Johnson claimed that CBS News trimmed significant portions of his interview, specifically targeting his responses to make him and conservative viewpoints look less favorable. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account, Speaker Johnson shared his frustration with CBS and accused the network of attempting to promote a partisan agenda by manipulating his words. He alleged that five critical minutes were cut from his nearly 15-minute interview, significantly altering the context of his responses.

“CBS has been under fire for selectively editing their interviews to PROMOTE Democrats and UNDERMINE Republicans. Yesterday, they chose to cut FIVE important minutes out of my nearly 15-minute interview. You can be the judge as to why,” Johnson posted.

He also promised to release the full, unedited answers to key questions that were cut by CBS, encouraging the public to see for themselves what the network chose to omit.

In a follow-up post, Johnson provided what he called “receipts” — clips of his full responses that didn’t make it into the final broadcast. These included questions on topics ranging from hurricane relief to voter integrity, the latter being a particularly contentious issue in recent political discourse.

One of the most significant portions CBS edited, according to Johnson, was his answer to a question about the integrity of state elections. He argued that the network deliberately excised parts of his response that dealt with voter identification and the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.

In the broadcast version of the interview, CBS aired Johnson saying, “Noncitizens are not allowed to vote under federal law,” but cut the rest of his explanation regarding the SAVE Act. The unaired portion of Johnson’s answer, as reported by the New York Post, continued: “But the states have prohibited it. We passed the SAVE ACT you know, in the House. The SAVE Act says you gotta have proof of citizenship before you register to vote.”

The missing minute and a half of this segment was key to Johnson’s defense of the SAVE Act, a bill that requires individuals to provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote. The omission, Johnson argued, made it seem as though his position was less grounded in facts, thereby undermining his argument for stronger election security.
