In a startling report released by Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO), whistleblowers have exposed serious failures by the U.S. Secret Service in preventing an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The incident, which left Trump injured and resulted in the tragic death of a supporter, has raised grave concerns about the Secret Service’s competence and the ability of federal agencies to protect high-profile political figures.
In July, Hawley sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, outlining allegations from a whistleblower about the inadequate security at Trump’s rally on July 13, 2024.
The letter reads:
“The whistleblower alleges that the USSS repeatedly declined offers from local law enforcement to utilize drone technology to secure the rally. They claim that after the shooting took place, the USSS reversed course and requested local law enforcement to deploy their drone technology to surveil the site in the aftermath of the attack.
According to one whistleblower, the night before the rally, U.S. Secret Service repeatedly denied offers from a local law enforcement partner to utilize drone technology to secure the rally. This means that the technology was both available to USSS and able to be deployed to secure the site. Secret Service said no.
The whistleblower further alleges that after the shooting took place, USSS changed course and asked the local partner to deploy the drone technology to surveil the site in the aftermath of the attack.
It is hard to understand why USSS would decline to use drones when they were offered, particularly given the fact USSS permitted the shooter to overfly the rally area with his own drone mere hours before event.”
Appearing on Jesse Watters’ show in September, Hawley provided additional shocking details, specifically targeting the lead Secret Service agent on duty during the attempted assassination.
Hawley claimed the agent had failed at least one of her training exams and was known to be a subpar performer, yet she was promoted by former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle, a close ally of the Biden administration.
Hawley described a troubling pattern based on whistleblower accounts, stating that the security at the Trump rally was “undermanned, understaffed, and lacking experienced personnel.”
He criticized acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe for not being forthcoming about the failures that occurred that day. “The fact that the director won’t level with the American people is completely unacceptable,” said Hawley.
In an earlier appearance on FOX News, Hawley revealed that the Secret Service was “woefully unprepared” to protect Trump.
He claimed that many of the law enforcement personnel at the rally were not Secret Service agents but DHS officers, and training had been conducted remotely via webinars.
Hawley also alleged that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been blocking efforts to obtain crucial documents related to the attempted assassination.
“The DHS is pressuring the Secret Service not to comply with Congress’s requests. What are they hiding?” he questioned.
On Monday, Hawley released a 22-page whistleblower report detailing these failures. According to Hawley’s Communications Director, Abigail Jackson, the report uncovered new revelations, including:
- Secret Service intelligence units, which typically work with local law enforcement to address security threats, were absent from the rally.
- The hospital where Trump was treated after the shooting was poorly secured, and the agent overseeing security couldn’t answer basic questions.
Despite numerous inquiries, the Secret Service and DHS have yet to provide answers, leaving many critical questions unresolved, such as:
- Who within the Secret Service or DHS denied counter-sniper coverage at the rally?
- When will the agencies name the lead agents responsible for Trump’s security that day?
- Did the Acting Secret Service Director deny resources to the Trump campaign or USSS sniper teams, as some reports suggest?
Hawley’s report accuses the Secret Service, DHS, and FBI of dragging their feet on the investigation, misleading the public, and refusing to cooperate with Congress. The lack of transparency has fueled widespread concern over how such a major security lapse led to a near-fatal attack on a former U.S. president.
