A criminal investigation into the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore has been initiated by the FBI, as reported by a source to The Associated Press.

The Washington Post initially disclosed this inquiry, which centers on the 985-foot container ship Dali and probes whether the crew was aware of significant system problems with the vessel prior to departing from the Port of Baltimore.

“Authorities are looking into the events leading up to the moment the ship lost power before slamming into one of the bridge’s support pillars, the Post reported, citing two U.S. officials familiar with the matter,” Fox News reported.

In a statement to Fox, the FBI confirmed the bureau “is present aboard the cargo ship Dali conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity. There is no other public information available, and we will have no further comment.”

“My office generally will not confirm the existence of or otherwise comment about investigations,” Erek L. Barron, the U.S. Attorney for Maryland, said in a statement to the Post. “However, the public should know, whether it’s gun violence, civil rights abuse, financial fraud, or any other threat to public safety or property, we will seek accountability for anyone who may be responsible.”

The criminal investigation is separate from the National Transportation Safety Board’s inquiry into the collapse’s cause and safety measures.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott announced on Monday that the city is taking legal action to hold those accountable for the incident and address its impacts on residents.

“The City of Baltimore will take decisive action to hold responsible all entities accountable for the Key Bridge tragedy, including the owner, charterer, manager/operator, and the manufacturer of the M/V Dali, as well as any other potentially liable third parties,” the mayor said in a statement.

The Dali’s lights suddenly went out and then back on after four minutes, as reported by investigators. At 1:25 a.m., black smoke started billowing from the ship’s chimney.

Just before it collided with the support at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to make a turn, with the lights flickering once more.

During the incident, officials mentioned that workers were fixing potholes on the bridge above where the ship crashed.

Two individuals were rescued from the river, while three bodies have been recovered, three are presumed dead, and six are missing.

The Port of Baltimore is crucial for car imports and exports and President Joe Biden has assured efforts to swiftly rebuild the bridge. The port plays a vital role in the economy of the Northeast region.

The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating the collapse.

  • Let the investigation be completed then and only then will the facts be made public. The WA POST loves to give opinions which accomplish nothing but hey it is the WA POST a fake paper!!!!! Run by a bunch of hating WOKEs!!!!!

    • 100%! ????
Remember years ago there was a TV show “FBI”; I watched it as a youngster.
Back then, the FBI was respected, “honest?” (as far as we knew) and agents actually went after the BAD guys.
Nowadays,…we can’t even count on any gov’t organization to go after anyone except ProLIFE Catholics, mothers protecting their children, et al.
I don’t even know what to believe anymore.
But I do know this: I wouldn’t trust the FBI as far as I could kick them.

  • The only important issue for the FBI (which is part of the “Justice” dept) is who is involved- politics above all, don’t ya know. The “Justice” dept is filled with leftists, commies, liars, rogues and partisan hacks. When U.S. attorney says it “will seek accountability for anyone who may be responsible”, we know that is exactly what it will NOT do. Re: Hunter Biden, Joe “the big guy”, James Biden, E. Jean Carroll (gun violations), Al Sharpton and all dems.

  • Most intelligent citizens came to that conclusion from day one. I hope this investigation will be honest and nothing swept under the rug and may ALL the players in this crime face severe punishment…no matter how far up the chain this goes.

  • Isn’t it comforting knowing the Federal Bureau of Idiots, and subversive organization is busy watching out for our interests!

  • From what I have learned about the FBI under Joe Biden they will destroy Evidence and Cover up and then LIE about it Period

  • Holding ship people responsible: Good thing
Biden using taxpayers’ money to rebuild bridge: Bad/Stupid thing

  • It does not sound like an “accident” any more. Sorry to say but I think it is a terrorist incident, more than likely a “cyber attack”. They need to rebuild the bridge with stronger pylons that are re-inforced and are very robust to prevent it from ever happening again.
