New ATF Deputy Director Appointed Amid Major Shakeup After Second-in-Command Ousted

The shake-up at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has seen the exit of Deputy Director Marvin Richardson. After a 35-year career, Richardson was reportedly given a choice to resign or be removed, leading to his decision to step down. This move came amidst pressure from top officials within the Trump administration.

Robert Cekada has stepped into the role, taking over as the ATF’s second-in-command. Cekada’s history with the agency dates back to 2005, and his appointment has sparked concern among conservatives. Many are wary of his extensive experience in regulatory enforcement, fearing it may lead to a stricter stance on lawful gun owners.

Cekada has an extensive resume, having overseen ATF’s Office of Regulatory Operations and serving as Special Agent in Charge of high-profile field divisions. His career has been deeply rooted in the intersection of law enforcement and federal gun policy. As per the ATF’s website, Cekada was named the Deputy Director in April 2025.

In his new role, Cekada is tasked with leading an agency that enforces laws related to firearms, explosives, arson, and alcohol and tobacco trafficking. Before this, he was the Executive Assistant Director – Operations, overseeing Regulatory, Field, and Intelligence Operations. His tenure in this position began in September 2022.

From January to September 2022, Cekada served as the Deputy Assistant Director Central, handling operational and regulatory oversight for 19 states in the central U.S. He also played a crucial role as the Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Division. In this capacity, he managed ATF operations across southern Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Cekada’s leadership extended to the Baltimore Field Division, where he oversaw operations in Maryland and Delaware. His earlier assignments included Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Philadelphia Field Division. Additionally, he was the Resident Agent in Charge of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force North in Miami.

His contributions to the ATF are complemented by his service on the National Crime Gun Intelligence Governing Board. Cekada is also an active member of the IACP Firearms Committee. He began his ATF career as a Special Agent in the Baltimore Field Division’s Hyattsville II Field Office.

Between 2005 and 2011, Cekada worked on the Regional Area Gang Enforcement Task Force. He later joined the Tampa Field Division for a two-year period before moving to ATF headquarters in 2013. At headquarters, he served as a project officer and then as a program manager.

Before his ATF career, Cekada was a police officer with the New York City Police Department from 1992 to 2000. There, he was part of the Housing Bureau, Citywide Anti-Gang Enforcement Unit, and Street Crime Unit, eventually becoming a detective. His focus on gun violence led him to the Organized Crime Control Bureau’s Gang Division.

Cekada also served with the City of Plantation Police Department in Broward County, Florida, from 2001 to 2005. In Plantation, he was part of the Patrol Division and Special Weapons and Tactics Team. His diverse background in law enforcement has shaped his approach to his current role.

His appointment follows the selection of U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as the new acting director of the ATF. Driscoll replaces FBI Director Kash Patel in this interim position. This change reflects the Trump administration’s ongoing reshuffling of key leadership roles.

The conservative community remains watchful of these developments, particularly with Cekada’s history in regulatory enforcement. His approach to gun policy will be scrutinized closely. The ATF’s future actions under his leadership will be pivotal in shaping federal gun regulations.
