Senator John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, has been elected as the new Senate Majority Leader, succeeding Mitch McConnell, who holds the record as the longest-serving party leader in Senate history. Thune, currently serving as Senate Minority Whip, will officially assume the leadership role in January when the new Congress convenes.
Thune’s rise to leadership followed a series of secret ballots conducted in the historic old Senate chamber on Wednesday morning. Initially, no candidate secured the majority required to win, leading to a narrowed contest between Thune and Senator John Cornyn of Texas. Senator Rick Scott of Florida, who received the fewest votes in the first round, was eliminated.
In the final round, Thune secured at least 27 votes from the 53-member Republican conference, solidifying his position as the party’s new Senate leader.
The selection process began with a forum hosted by Senator Mike Lee of Utah, where candidates presented their visions and plans for the Senate’s future. Thune emphasized his experience and steady leadership style, gaining endorsements from key GOP senators, including Markwayne Mullin (Okla.), Mike Rounds (S.D.), Kevin Cramer (N.D.), and John Hoeven (N.D.).
Behind the scenes, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Steve Daines reportedly worked to rally support for Thune. Meanwhile, Scott drew public endorsements from prominent conservatives, such as Senators Ted Cruz (Texas), Ron Johnson (Wis.), and Rand Paul (Ky.), though it was not enough to carry him through. Cornyn, in contrast, received limited public backing, with Senator Josh Hawley (Mo.) being his sole high-profile supporter.
Despite his close relationship with McConnell, Thune is perceived as a less aggressive political operator. His more reserved approach may provide opportunities for Senate allies of President-elect Donald Trump to advance key elements of the America First agenda. However, Thune’s leadership style could also face challenges, especially in navigating a divided Senate and working with a Republican-controlled House.
Thune’s leadership will likely spotlight his strong ties to major corporate donors, which could shape his legislative priorities. His campaign has consistently received significant financial backing from the finance, insurance, and real estate sectors.
One of Thune’s largest corporate supporters is New York Life Insurance, contributing over $150,000 since 2016 through individual and PAC donations. Other prominent insurance backers include Prudential Financial and Guardian Life Insurance.
In addition to insurance, Thune has cultivated relationships with major players in technology and communications, including Google, Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon. The Sinclair Broadcast Group has also been a consistent donor.
Thune’s most substantial donor, however, is NextEra Energy, an energy sector giant, which has contributed nearly $300,000 to his campaign committee since 2016.
Other notable contributors include the Blackstone Group, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Sanford Health, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
Thune’s deep ties to corporate donors will likely come under scrutiny as he navigates his new role. Balancing these financial relationships with the legislative priorities of a Republican conference eager to advance Trump’s policy agenda could prove challenging.
As the GOP embarks on a new chapter with Thune at the helm, the dynamics between corporate influence, party unity, and policy advancement will be key in shaping the Senate’s direction in the coming years.
There is nothing “new” about Thune. He is a McConnell clone. The Senate could have elected someone new like Scott. He better fight or there will be a lot of Americans making our displeasure know and ask to throw him out.
Correct!
I would like to know if Mr. Thune owns stock in Blackstone or Vangard.
Sounds like Corporate America owns his ass so he better kick some ass or his ass will be in the dumpster; We the People have no more time for some political crony to play politics with our lives anymore! That parasite McConnell was allowed to fester like rotting demon shit for decades, so the GOP better have their act together and not do any repeat performances! We the People DEMAND proper actions and no games! You jerks work for us and its high time you all start doing it!
He is not a new sherif just old Rhino. The GOP shot themselves in the foot again. He better perform quickly or the GOP will have hell to pay. They will never get my vote again.
