President Trump held a White House press conference after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner forced the event to be halted, calling for Americans to reject violence and highlighting law enforcement’s response while confirming the suspect was captured and under investigation.

President Trump addressed the nation Saturday evening surrounded by senior officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Vice President JD Vance, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and FBI Director Kash Patel. He opened by thanking first responders and noting that First Lady Melania Trump and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt were present. The president said the Correspondents’ Dinner was postponed for the night and promised it would be rescheduled.

Trump praised law enforcement for their swift action and even acknowledged the media for exercising restraint in the immediate aftermath. He confirmed that an officer had been shot during the chaotic incident but indicated the officer is expected to survive thanks to a bulletproof vest.

At times he stressed continuity, saying he had wanted the event to continue but recognized the practical need to pause. He emphasized the desire not to allow acts of violence to dictate public life.

“We’re not going to cancel things out because we can’t do that. We wanted to stay tonight.”

Trump appealed directly to the American people to reject violence and to resolve political disagreements through peaceful means. He referenced past close calls in Butler, Pennsylvania, and Palm Beach, Florida to remind listeners that political violence is a recurring danger.

“In Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago. You all know that story. And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close.”

“In light of this evening’s events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts in resolving our difference peacefully.”

“I will say you had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives.”

“Everybody in that room, big crowd, record-setting crowd.”

“There was a record-setting group of people. And there was a tremendous amount of love and coming together. I watched.”

The president also confirmed that authorities apprehended the attacker and were actively investigating his background, including searching his residence. He said the suspect lives in California and described him as “a sick person” while noting that investigators would comb through his past to determine motive and connections.

“The man has been captured. They’re going to his apartment,” he said. “I guess he lives in California — and he’s a sick person…

Reporters asked whether Trump felt personally threatened after multiple attempts on his life since announcing his 2024 run, and he responded without showing fear. He acknowledged the political heat but framed it as a reason for national unity rather than division, insisting that differences must be worked out peacefully.

Throughout the briefing, the president emphasized respect for institutions and the people who protect them, calling for calm and civic responsibility. He noted the broad mix of attendees at the event and urged everyone to recommit to solving disputes without violence. The message focused less on partisan blame and more on a shared responsibility to keep the country safe.

Law enforcement updates, medical details about the wounded officer, and the status of the suspect’s detention were the main concrete facts the White House supplied during the short briefing. Officials standing beside the president reinforced that the investigation would continue and that further information would be released as authorities pieced together the timeline and motive for the attack.

The president closed with a call to action for the nation’s leaders and citizens to set an example in tone and behavior, arguing that peaceful engagement is the only sustainable path forward in a divided country. His final remarks underscored gratitude for first responders and a determination to move forward while respecting the seriousness of the night’s events.
