President Donald Trump recently voiced his displeasure with Republican Representative Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. Fitzpatrick, along with Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, sided with Democrats to oppose what Trump dubbed the Big, Beautiful Bill. This legislative proposal passed the House and now awaits the President’s signature.
Trump, who was in Iowa for a July 4 celebration, expressed his disappointment directly. “Well, I was disappointed that he did that. There were two of them that voted no, so I was disappointed that he [Fitzpatrick] voted no,” he stated.
House Speaker Mike Johnson had called a vote on the budget legislation to ensure it reached Trump’s desk by July 4. However, on Wednesday evening, four Republicans joined Democrats in voting against the measure. Johnson kept the vote open as Republican members worked to sway their colleagues.
Initially, Fitzpatrick, along with Keith Self of Texas, Victoria Spartz of Indiana, and Andrew Clyde of Georgia, stalled the bill’s progress. By Thursday, after an eight-hour speech by House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, the bill narrowly passed with a vote of 218 to 214. Massie and Fitzpatrick’s opposition was crucial in this narrow margin.
Fitzpatrick explained his stance via a statement on his website. He highlighted concerns over the Senate’s amendments to Medicaid and other provisions that “altered the analysis for our PA-1 community.” He emphasized his vote was to protect Medicaid and support middle-class tax cuts.
Fitzpatrick further elaborated on his decision-making process. “The original House language was written in a way that protected our community; the Senate amendments fell short of our standard. I believe in, and will always fight for, policies that are thoughtful, compassionate, and good for our community,” he stated.
In the weeks leading to the vote, Massie was vocal about his opposition. Trump, during peak tensions with Iran, criticized Massie’s stance, threatening to support a primary challenger against him. “MAGA should drop this pathetic LOSER, Tom Massie, like the plague!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Massie revealed he might support a “skinny” version of the bill. He argued that the original proposal did not adequately reduce government spending. After the final vote, Massie commented, “It wasn’t beautiful enough for me to vote for it.”
