Reports noted that Busch had appeared unwell at a race ten days earlier, during the Cup Series event at Watkins Glen on May 10. During that race he radioed his crew requesting medical assistance and a post-race injection, saying he had been battling a sinus cold aggravated by the physical demands of the track. Despite the issues he finished the race in eighth, a testament to his toughness and determination behind the wheel.
