Judges Decline to Detain RI Man Accused of Trump Assassination Threats

A Rhode Island man named Carl D. Montague is currently under scrutiny after being indicted for allegedly threatening to assassinate President Donald J. Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. Despite the severity of his charges, two federal judges with Democratic affiliations have allowed Montague to remain free, albeit with a GPS ankle monitor, as they denied the U.S. Department of Justice’s requests to detain him before his trial. Montague faces serious charges, including threats against the president and other officials, with potential prison terms ranging from five to 20 years.

The threats made by Montague were described as violent and explicit, clearly indicating his intent to harm the individuals targeted. Despite his arrest on July 9 and a history of four assault convictions since 2014, a magistrate judge chose not to detain him at the DOJ’s request. Agents continued their search on June 30 by visiting the apartment of one of Montague’s known associates in the same housing complex. The associate claimed he had not seen Montague for a few days, while another resident was certain Montague was in the apartment they had just checked. Upon returning to that unit, agents found Montague hiding in the bathtub, according to the FBI.

Before the FBI agents could even introduce themselves or explain their presence, Montague began confessing to making the threats. The FBI’s account of the incident highlights Montague’s immediate admission of guilt. When shown the threatening post on Truth Social, Montague confirmed it was indeed his submission.
