A rounder chest, an advantage in certain other ways, also helps reduce aerodynamic drag through something called chest fairing, according to Bert Blocken, a professor of aerodynamics at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland and LUT in Finland.
The use of a padded bra is prohibited under the regulations of the International Cycling Union (UCI), which make it clear you can’t place objects on the chest or use clothing to alter the body shape of a rider.
“We are talking about a Chest Fairing, which alters the airflow around the body, thereby reducing overpressure on the thighs. As a result, the rider experiences less air resistance,” said Professor Blocken.
Blocken’s published experiments indicate that the right shape covering the whole chest can cut air resistance by up to 3.6 percent and save about 0.78 seconds per kilometer in the optimal case. Over a multi-kilometer time trial, that adds up, and teams chasing every advantage pay close attention to anything that delivers tenths and seconds. Observers say they noticed riders whose chest profiles appeared deliberately smoothed under race kits, a visual cue that raised alarms.
Beyond the controlled lab work, similar real-world findings come from other sports where athletes tuck objects to streamline their bodies. Past studies referenced the effect of items like water bottles under jerseys for triathletes, where the bottle can reduce drag and deliver significant watt savings over long distances. Those examples underscore the practical impact of even simple modifications on competitive performance.
Two years ago, The Triathlete published an article about studies by Blocken and Jim Manton (ERO Sports) into the advantage triathletes gain when they tuck a water bottle under their jersey. For the average athlete, this can result in a saving of over 12 watts, which leads to a time gain of up to two minutes on a full Ironman. Here, too, it was clearly visible that the bottle streamlines the chest and directs the airflow between the legs, resulting in less back pressure on the pelvis.
The UCI rulebook is explicit: riders may not attach foam, padding, tape, or plastic forms to or under the chest to create a more streamlined shape. The regulation exists because the sport wants to keep a line between clever equipment design and artificial body alteration. When governing bodies spot potential violations, the penalties are immediate and severe, including disqualification during the event.
Teams now face a delicate balancing act: defend their athletes from unfair scrutiny while cooperating with race officials and preserving the integrity of competition.
