In an effort to protect the health and well-being of minors, Missouri Senator Josh Hawley recently introduced legislation that would bar social media companies from offering accounts to children under 16.

This proposed MATURE Act seeks to verify the age of users by scanning government-issued ID and requires parents to be able to sue social media platforms if they allow their underage child to create an account.

Hawley’s proposed legislation is a much-needed step toward protecting children against the inherent dangers of digital media. We know that children can suffer emotionally and psychologically from the overuse or misuse of these platforms, which often monetize their personal information with little regard for their safety.

Young people are particularly vulnerable, as they may not have the capacity or maturity to recognize when they are being manipulated or exploited.

Research also suggests there may be links between excessive use of social media and increased risk for gender dysphoria, depression, anxiety, suicidality, eating disorders, and attention deficit disorder in young people.

By passing this legislation, we can send a powerful message that companies should no longer be allowed to take advantage of our children’s health and privacy for the sake of profit.

For the purpose of further understanding how social media affects young people’s mental health, Hawley also introduced a bill commissioning a report on the impact over 10 years old with an emphasis on gender dysphoria, depression, anxiety, suicidality, eating disorders, and attention deficit disorder which will help us better understand how we can best protect our kids in an increasingly digital world.

It is time that we got serious about protecting our kids from potential harm posed by digital media usage. It is time that our laws reflect this commitment as well as provide resources to ensure their safety online.

By banning social media accounts for minors through this legislation we can give parents more power to safeguard their children’s well-being both online and offline.

  • Hmmm, aren’t kids minors until the age of 18 not 16. Why is it these ages of consent keep changing? can vote and go to war at 18, but can’t drink until your 21. able to decide you are a different sex, as a child and start transition without parents consent. know wonder people are confused these days.

    • Big government????? parent’s responsibility not government personnel. If a leftist proposed this, Hawley would be all over it. Laws, laws and more laws. Should be few and far between with sunset clauses.

We hate laws! Except when repubs advocate them. Enemies??? Worst are the do nothing repubs, who then do what the dems do when they finally do, do something.

I haven’t been a repub for years, nor a so called conservative (fricken mcconnel calls himself one) I am a Constitutionalist, period.

    • That’s because the Dems want to give 16 year old children the right to vote in elections. With all of the manipulation and indoctrination from public schools and Hollywood , the 16 year old’s will make good Communists. Heck, unless one has full time employment and responsibilities in REALITY OF LIFE or served in the armed services, 21 year old’s shouldn’t be permitted to vote. Look what is happening in our colleges and universities as well as a generation of 30 year old’s still living with their parents.

    • While I would love for it to be 18, 16 is a good start and 18 probably wouldn’t pass. If your head isn’t somewhat on straight by 16, 2 years won’t help much if at all. Better to get the young kids off at least

  • I was born long before computers, the internet or cell phones were invented.
We survived. I tell you what- I have never had so many crank calls as I do with my cell phone. If it isn’t con artists wanting to sell you something, it’s a wrong number.
Also, no one should talk on the phone while driving. If my phone rings while I’m driving, I just let it ring and call them back, but the younger idiots have those damn cell phones glued to their ears.
I used to think technology was a good thing. Many wonderful things were invented but it opens up another can of worms. For example: I was at the gas station getting a coffee and the computerized cash registers broke down. You couldn’t swipe your card and the cash drawer wouldn’t open. Luckily I had some small change on me.
My observation: the more they try to fix the plumbing- the easier it is to clog up the drain. Everything is computerized, even my damn washing machine.

    • sounds good but what kind of proof of age will be required? How will that info be conveyed? many of my now grown grandkids lied about their age to get on FB. I have one, now grown, grandson who repeatedly took down school progra.s limiting what students could access. the devil’s in the details

  • I am creating an honest wage from home 1900 Dollars/week , that is wonderful, below a year ago I used to be unemployed during an atrocious economy. I convey God on a daily basis. I used to be endowed with these directions and currently it’s my duty to pay it forward and share it with everybody… 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐲𝟑.𝐧𝐞𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬.𝐨𝐫𝐠

  • Excellent proposal! Now ban cell phones, tablets, laptops, & desk tops in classrooms before junior level HS, & teach them to read, write, do math, real history, & repeatable sciences… in other words, EDUCATE them, instead of indoctrinating “bots”!

    • Like he said, the kid has to show his license or state Id to get the acct. if he somehow cheats, the parents can sue. That should be more than enough to get the scumbag companies to keep the kids out. It’s not like they make money off of them other than raising the amount of acts
