Cleveland Guardians fans were left frustrated Friday night after a rain-forced postponement of Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays triggered an unexpected change to their ticket assignments.
The postponement was announced roughly an hour after the game’s originally scheduled first pitch, by which point many fans had already arrived at the ballpark, parked, bought food and picked up merchandise. The delay came despite the Guardians’ own X account posting “Rain or shine” just an hour before first pitch.
The team then announced that fans holding tickets for the postponed Game 4 would be able to use them for Game 5, which has now been moved to Sunday instead of its originally scheduled Saturday slot. Fans who already held tickets for Game 5, meanwhile, were told they “do not need to take action” and can attend Saturday night’s game instead.
That arrangement means fans who bought Game 5 tickets hoping to witness a potential pennant-clinching win will instead be attending Game 4, since Cleveland currently leads the series 2-1 over Tampa Bay.
“This is an insane way to handle tickets. Tomorrow should be Game 4 and Sunday should be Game 5. Tickets should be used in that order. This is gonna cause hella problems,” one fan wrote on X Friday night.
“Imagine you thought you had tickets to a possible pennant-clinching win at home tomorrow night and they just casually change your tickets to Game 4. Totally ridiculous. Game is not of equal value,” another fan wrote, adding that “tickets should remain assigned to their originally designated Game # in the series.”
“I’d be a little annoyed if I bought what could be series ending tickets and got moved up a game,” wrote a third fan.
The situation could cut the other way for some: if Cleveland wins Saturday night, those holding tickets originally meant for Friday’s postponed game could end up at what becomes a series-clinching contest instead.
Assuming the weather cooperates, Saturday’s first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
