A machete attack at Grand Central-42 Street subway station left three people wounded and the attacker dead after police shot him; officials say victims are stable and investigators do not believe the incident is terror-related at this time.

Saturday morning in Manhattan turned chaotic when a man armed with a machete reportedly moved through platforms and slashed multiple riders before officers confronted him. Police responded after he exited a 7 train and continued onto uptown platforms serving the 4, 5 and 6 trains, according to authorities. First responders transported the injured to Bellevue Hospital, and officials say those victims are expected to survive.

The episode, on the platform of the 7 train and then uptown 4, 5 and 6 trains, began just after 9:30 a.m. when the man, who had been seen acting erratically on a subway train, exited at the Grand Central-42 Street Station and slashed three people on the two platforms, according to the police.

Officers responding to the scene repeatedly ordered the man to drop the machete, but he refused to comply, the police said. One of the officers then shot the man, they said.

Emergency medical workers took the three stabbing victims to Bellevue Hospital, where they were in stable condition and expected to survive, the police said. The victims included two men, 84 and 65 years old, and a 70-year-old woman, according to three law enforcement officials who were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

The attacker was also taken to Bellevue, where he was later pronounced dead, the officials said. Two officers were being treated for noise exposure at another hospital, they said.

Officials identified the attacker as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, and police say they repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon before one officer fired. Investigators at the scene described the man’s behavior as erratic prior to the slashing and say the situation escalated quickly when he moved between platforms. Two officers sustained noise exposure and received treatment at a separate hospital, according to officials.

Police have opened an internal probe into the shooting and plan to release officers’ body-camera footage as standard procedure in cases involving an officer-involved shooting. City leaders expressed gratitude for the quick response by law enforcement that prevented further harm to riders. At this stage, authorities told reporters they do not believe the attack is connected to terrorism.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani posted praise for the NYPD’s actions and thanked officers for subduing the attacker. His statement noted an internal investigation and the forthcoming release of body-camera recordings. Officials emphasized that transparency and a thorough review are part of the department’s response to any incident involving use of deadly force.

In a statement on social media, Mr. Mamdani thanked the police for their work in subduing the attacker. “I’m grateful to the N.Y.P.D. for their quick response and for preventing additional violence,” he said. He added that an internal police investigation was underway and that the department would release the officers’ body-camera footage, as is standard in cases of police shootings.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also weighed in, calling the episode horrific and thanking officers who stopped the suspect. Her office said investigators are working closely with the NYPD as they piece together the timeline and motives. Officials reiterated that the victims are being treated and that hospitals report they should recover.

I’ve been briefed on the horrific incident at Grand Central this morning.

Two innocent people were attacked in a senseless act of violence. I’m grateful to our brave officers who acted quickly to stop the suspect.

We’re working closely with the NYPD as the investigation unfolds.

Eyewitnesses described confusion on the platforms as commuters scrambled for exits and protective cover while emergency crews arrived. Transit operations were disrupted as police secured the area and investigators collected evidence, producing delays on multiple lines during morning travel. MTA staff coordinated with law enforcement to manage crowding and restore service as quickly and safely as possible.

Authorities confirmed they transferred the attacker to Bellevue Hospital where he was pronounced dead, and that multiple victims—two men aged 84 and 65 and a 70-year-old woman—were treated there and expected to survive. Law enforcement officials said they were not authorized to discuss other case specifics publicly as the investigation continues. Detectives are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance and body-camera video.

Local reporting teams and broadcasters covered the police briefing and hospital updates live, providing ongoing coverage as state and city officials answered questions from the media. One broadcast described the press event and offered details about the attacker and the response by officers. Officials urged anyone with relevant video or information to contact investigators to assist in establishing a full timeline of what happened that morning.

The incident has prompted renewed discussion about subway safety and how transit systems can prevent violent episodes while ensuring swift, lawful responses when they occur. City leaders and law enforcement emphasized the priority of protecting riders and supporting victims through medical care and information. Investigators expect to release additional details about the sequence of events and the officers involved as the review proceeds.

Local outlets later aired further coverage, including statements from officials and video from the scene, expanding on the attack and the identity of the deceased suspect. Broadcasters relayed that the 44-year-old attacker had been identified as Anthony Griffin and added context from police about the timeline. Updates from the hospital and law enforcement will continue to shape the public record as the investigation advances.

  • NYPD a job well done as you took care of the business at hand and neutralized the threat quickly and effectively!
