Apple’s first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale today and is available through T-Mobile for $0 upfront for customers who transfer an existing phone number and enroll in the carrier’s Experience Beyond plan.
The device features a 7.6-inch foldable display, which Apple says is the largest screen it has ever put on an iPhone. The foldable design is meant to keep the phone compact enough to carry in a pocket or bag while unfolding into a larger screen for video, video calls, gaming and other uses.
When closed, the phone retains most core functions through a vertical control panel on the outside. Users can also partially open the device to prop it upright on a flat surface, using it as a stand for video playback or to display a clock, photos or other widgets.
Apple built the display with reduced glare, and the front-facing camera is concealed within the screen until it’s in use. The camera system includes a feature called Smart Take, which automatically captures a photo when it detects that everyone in frame is ready. When the phone is fully unfolded, the person being photographed can see a preview of the shot on the display. A separate feature displays an on-screen graphic meant to get children to look at the camera and smile.
The foldable screen also supports split-screen use, letting users run two apps side by side and move files or images between them.
Apple says the iPhone Duo has greater memory bandwidth than previous models and is the company’s first iPhone with a dual-battery system, which it says extends time between charges. Siri and Apple Intelligence are built into the device.
The phone is available in two colors, Night Sky and Star White, with storage options of 256 GB, 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Pricing varies by storage capacity. Buyers can pay in full or through monthly installments.
New T-Mobile customers can switch carriers when purchasing the iPhone Duo, while existing T-Mobile customers can add the device to their current plan.
