Country music legend Wynonna Judd has responded to fellow singer Kacey Musgraves’ profanity-laced rant against Christopher Columbus, delivered during a concert in Texas this past Monday, saying entertainers should think twice before turning their shows into political platforms.
Musgraves told the Texas crowd, “Obviously f— Columbus. Literally the lamest person to probably ever exist. Like for real. What a loser,” as she addressed the Columbus Day holiday from the stage. The remarks drew a mixed reaction from concertgoers and sparked wider debate online.
Judd addressed the controversy during an appearance on “Tomi Lahren is Fearless,” offering a measured but pointed response. “She has the right to do that,” Judd told Lahren. “But that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing.”
The Country Music Hall of Famer was careful not to lecture fellow artists or fans, saying she doesn’t see her own concerts as a place for political messaging. “I never hear from my fans, ‘Hey, would you come out and sing “Grandpa” and tell me what your political view is,'” Judd said. “My job is to be an entertaining person.”
She added that her late grandmother “would’ve had a fit” over the kind of commentary Musgraves delivered from the stage.
Judd said she tries to live by a simple guiding question when deciding what to share publicly: “what would Dolly [Parton] do.” Like Parton, Judd said she prefers to let her actions, rather than political statements, speak for her — pointing to her longstanding support for military service members as an example.
Judd said she’s troubled when people try to attach a political label to her support for troops. “I didn’t come here to talk about politics, I came to talk about music,” she said. “It’s nobody’s business what I try to do in my private life.”
“I’m a patriot. I support my servicemen. My son is a deputy. And I am for America. Period.”
Judd told Lahren that when she performs, she makes a point of acknowledging the American flag, explaining that her love of country comes before any political affiliation — hers or anyone else’s. “We live in the greatest country in the world,” she said. “If it was President Biden, I would support him. Because he’s the freaking president.”
